MAINTENANCE CARPENTER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under supervision, perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance carpentry work in the repair, construction, alteration of wooden articles and structures; and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform both rough and finish carpentry work in the repair, construction and alteration of wooden articles and structures such as partitions, counters, doors, window frames, forms, bulletin boards and fences;
2. Match material for color, grain and texture;
3. Mix, pour, and finish concrete;
4. Install, replace and repair door and window hardware;
5. Make and repair school and office furniture, equipment and wooden fixtures and may perform necessary mill and cabinet work;
6. Perform minor plaster patching work, build closets, cases and shelving and fit doors, windows, sashes and screens;
7. Install drywall and prepare for painting;
8. Install metal and plastic derivatives;
9. Lay and repair floors and roofs;
10. Affix asphalt, ceramic and acoustical tile;
11. Operate lathes, planers, shapers, joiners, bandsaws and other woodworking machinery;
12. Apply formica to various surfaces;
13. Sharpen hand tools and see that tools and equipment are properly maintained;
14. Determine materials needed and requisition carpentry supplies; and
15. Direct the work of Maintenance Worker as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the carpentry trade, including both rough and finish carpentry;
2. Knowledge of the basic qualities of various woods used for school plant purposes, and their adaptability and uses in specific situations;
3. Ability to perform shop mathematics;
4. Ability to prepare, interpret and work from drawings and blueprints;
5. Ability to perform both rough and finish carpentry and to use and care for carpentry tools;
6. Ability to use and operate mechanical tools;
7. Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
8. Ability to work cooperatively with others;
9. Ability to research and apply appropriate codes and regulations; and
10. Ability to lift.
EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:
1. Graduation from high school; and
2. Three years of general maintenance carpentry experience.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
1. Possession of a valid State of California Driver’s License.
