MAINTENANCE PAINTER DEFINITION: Under supervision, perform skilled maintenance painting work in protecting and decorating the surfaces of buildings, furniture, and related equipment; glaze windows; and perform related duties as required. TYPICAL DUTIES: 1. Apply paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels to building interiors, exteriors, furniture, and equipment; prepare drywall for painting; 2. Apply paints by brush, roller, or spray machine to a variety of surfaces; 3. Measure, cut, and replace glass and glass substitutes, including skylights; 4. Apply line stripping to courts, parking lots, and lanes; remove graffiti; 5. Reglaze desk tops, exit lights, light fixtures, mirrors, and louvers; refinish floors; 6. Apply stenciling to curbs, roads, signs and doors; 7. Erect scaffolding; remove and/or cover objects to protect from spattered paints; 8. Observe safety precautions in preparing surfaces by scraping, sanding, sealing, dusting, washing, and by puttying and patching holes and cracks; 9. Clean brushes; clean and maintain painting and glazing tools and equipment; 10. Mix and match paints; and 11. Provide work direction to others as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the glazing and painting trade; 2. Knowledge of the basic qualities of various paints and sealers and their adaptability and uses in specific situations; 3. Ability to mix and match paints; blend, harmonize, and contrast colors; 4. Ability to apply paints by brush, roller, or spray gun; 5. Ability to use and maintain glazing and painting tools; 6. Ability to perform shop mathematics; 7. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; 8. Ability to set up and work from ladders and scaffolds; 9. Ability to lift; and 10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma, or equivalent; and 2. Three years of varied experience in painting work. LICENSE REQUIRED: 1. Possession of a valid State of California Class C Driver’s License.
