This position reports to the Superintendent, and will provide direct professional legal counsel and representation for the Superintendent of Schools, Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), and the Alameda County Board of Education (ACBOE).

THE POSITION: The General Counsel is responsible for planning, organizing, and providing direct professional legal counsel and representation for the Superintendent of Schools, the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), the Alameda County Board of Education (ACBOE), and senior administrative staff on ACOE legal matters as Chief Legal Counsel; coordinate the delivery of legal services provided by outside counsel and perform and supervise other work as required; oversee litigation and administrative law hearings; supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned legal and other personnel. This job reports to the Superintendent of Schools. LOCATION: 313 W. Winton Ave. Hayward, CA 94544 TYPICAL DUTIES: Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools; assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs; advise the Board of Education and the Superintendent of unusual trends or problems and recommend appropriate corrective action. Oversee the Policy & Legislation Board Committee and other committees created by the ACBOE. Provide legal advice in the drafting of legal documents, rules and regulations, resolutions, applications and other legal or quasi-legal papers for the Superintendent, Board of Education, and senior administrative staff. Oversee and respond to any special election related issues for district boards of education within Alameda County. Attend and provide legal advice at regular meetings of the Board of Education and such other meetings as the Board of Education or Superintendent directs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Experience: Six years as a practicing attorney, preferably in an educational or other public agency. Three of these years must have included the supervision of technical, professional, administrative staff, and/or coordination with outside legal counsel. Equivalency: A combination of education and job-related experience equivalent to the above qualifications.
