Health Clerk / Licensed Vocational Nurse
JOB SUMMARY
This position is under general supervision of site principal and direct supervision of District School Nurse, to assist in performing a variety of functions pertaining to student health needs, appraisal and record keeping; Perform specialized physical health care services for students; may travel to various school sites to perform a wide variety of nursing duties; Assist in the care of ill or injured students; Administer routine first aid, emergency treatment and lice checks; and to do other related work as required. Maintain a healthy and safe environment for students and staff within the Health Clerk’s work area.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Application of:
Principles, methods, and practices of CPR and First Aid and routine emergency treatment; Standard policies and procedures pertaining to student health services and requirements; Modern medical terminology, equipment and techniques commonly associated with a student health facility; Emergency service agencies within the close proximity of the assigned school site; public health agencies and local health care resources; Record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation techniques, oral and written communication. Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene; basic diagnostic methods for medical conditions and diseases; accepted medical assessment techniques; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Health & safety regulations; Operation of specialized medical equipment, machines and instruments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION:
May include, but not limited to:
1Perform specialized physical health care services for students including suctioning, blood sugar testing, medication administration, catheterizations, drip and tube feeding administration, and other specialized nursing services
2Operate specialized medical equipment and instruments in the assessment and treatment of individuals.
3Respond to emergencies, evaluate condition of students and provide health instruction and care as needed
4Assist with the preparation and execution of a variety of examinations pertaining to the health appraisal of students, including physical, vision, lice, and hearing examinations.
5Record health appraisal history and the results of health appraisal examinations.
6Assist in typing and distributing reports concerning the findings of health appraisals and in health appraisal follow-up activities.
7May travel to various school sites to perform a wide variety of nursing duties; assess illnesses and injuries and apply first aid as needed
8Assess and assist students with seizures
9Check for skin abnormalities and other conditions
10Obtain vital signs when necessary
11Maintain a healthy and safe environment for students and staff within the Health Clerk’s work area
12Assure cleanliness and sanitary conditions of medical instruments and offices
13Attend a variety of meetings to maintain current knowledge of medical laws, rules and regulations and technological advancements in the field of medicine
14Provide information to staff, students and parents regarding safety issues, head lice, hand-washing practices and other health-related matters
15Render first aid treatment to injured and ill students.
16Sterilize, disinfect, and bandage minor cuts, abrasions, and burns.
17Observe pupils for signs of shock and other emergency situations, and takes appropriate remedial action following a predetermined procedure.
18Take and record temperatures of ill students, and reports the results to health service or administrative personnel as appropriate.
19Provide a quiet, comfortable, and calming atmosphere for ill and injured pupils.
20Perform routine evaluations of student illness and injury situations, and determines the need for emergency, supervisory, or administrative assistance.
21May give medication prescribed specifically for students by medical authority, following a closely controlled procedure.
22Contact parents or other responsible persons regarding ill or injured students.
23Communicate with school personnel and outside organization to exchange information, refer students, report suspected child abuse, coordinate activities and resolve other health-related issues and concerns
24May assist in cleaning and changing of ill students and physically impaired students, and in cleaning and disinfecting of the student health area.
25Maintain a variety of student records and records pertaining to the health office activities including, but not limited to, reports, doctor orders, parental consents
26Perform other related duties as assigned
Experience/Education:
High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Any combination equivalent to: graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurses Training program
Two (2) years experience in performing a variety of health-care related services, preferable in a student health facility.
Conditions of Employment:
Current valid California State license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse
Possession of valid First Aid and CPR Certificates
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurses Training Program Two (2) years’ experience in performing a variety of health-care related services, preferable in a student health facility. Current valid California State license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, required
