TITLE OF POSITIONSKILLED MAINTENANCE CRAFTSMAN

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Maintenance & Operations/Facilities Services, the job of "Skilled Maintenance Craftsman" involves maintaining facilities in a safe operating condition; maintains a preventive maintenance program; documents information; and resolves immediate safety concerns.  Performs skilled duties at the journeyman level in one or more of the building construction or mechanical trades a majority of the time. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Equipment

  • Overhauls, repairs, maintains and services all district trucks, tractors and lighter motorized equipment for the purpose of maintaining safe operating conditions.
  • Plans and performs preventative maintenance on these vehicles.
  • Welds, fabricates and does body and fender work and painting.

Plumbing

  • Repairs, installs and maintains landscape irrigation sprinkler systems.
  • Repairs, installs and maintains water, gas, and sewer lines; repairs, installs and maintains air piping, fitting and valves.
  • Repairs and installs water pumps and such plumbing fixtures as water heaters, toilets, showers, faucets and drinking fountains.

Air Conditioning

  • Repairs HVAC, plumbing, and pump systems for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe working condition.
  • Engages in the repair, maintenance and servicing of all types of air conditioning equipment.

Other Craft Areas

  • Installs fencing, cabinetry, variety of system/s equipment, etc., for the purpose of maintaining facilities and equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Installs and repairs door hardware and locks, carpentry, boiler work.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Inspects playground equipment, roof drainage, vehicles, etc., for the purpose of maintaining a preventive maintenance program.         
  • Maintains work records of all jobs; orders equipment, tools, supplies to ensure adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Performs arc and acetylene welding.
  • Performs general maintenance duties and other related jobs as required. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists other skilled crafts for the purpose of supporting their work assignments.
  • Operates powered hand tools of the trade, as well as a variety of shop equipment.
  • Requests cost quotations for purchasing and securing items.
  • Designs systems/projects for the implementation of  new systems.
  • Coordinates with District staff and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Familiarity with the standards for school and public building construction and repair 

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience Required: Prior job related experience in one or more crafts.  Attainment of journeyman level skills in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, office equipment, locksmithing or similar specialized craft, preferably including experience and competence in at least two or more trades.
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skills in operating hand and power tools used in crafts; reading and interpretation of plans, blueprints and/or schematics.  Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in crafts, appropriate building codes, safety practices.  Abilities to stand for extended periods; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision.  Significant physical abilities include:  lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, reaching/handling/fingering, talking-/hearing ordinary conversation and other noises, near visual acuity/depth perception.
  • Training Required: Proficiency in appropriate trade.
  • Education Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid driver's license and evidence of insurability, TB test clearance, and criminal justice fingerprint clearance.
