GENERAL DESCRIPTION The school nurse shall administer School Health Services. RESPONSIBLE TO Director of Pupil Services and Building Principal QUALIFICATIONS 1. A valid license as Registered Nurse in California. 2. A baccalaureate or higher from an accredited institution. 3. Health and Development Credential or Standard Designated Services Credential with a specialization in Health. 4. A valid Public Health Nursing Certificate (No longer required). 5. A school Audiometrict’s Certificate. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. To organize, plan and administer the total school health program in accordance with State law and district policies and philosophy. 2. To be a contributing member of the school staff in interpretation, communication, and remediation of health problems of school children. 3. To identify health problems and assess the development status of children by means of appropriate screening techniques and case-finding procedures. 4. To identify pupils and their families in need of health counseling and to work to modify behavior through individual and group counseling. 5. To assist in planning educational services appropriate for pupils who’s mental, physical and social problems require special programs. 6. To prevent and control communicable disease in the school population in accordance with regulations established by state and local health departments. 7. To plan for emergency care in the school to minimize the effects of accidents and illness. 8. To assist in promoting a healthful and safe school environment. 9. To serve as a resource person to teachers and pupils in health instruction. 10. To work with community agencies with regard to school health programs, and services for special needs of families. 11. To maintain health records. 12. To supervise the functions of the health aides. 13. To promote the use of the latest findings in the areas of physical, social and mental health in the schools.
