BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Principal and Director of Special Services, and the functional supervision of the classroom and special education teacher, assists a certificated teacher or specialist in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students; monitors and reports student progress regarding behavior and performance; performs a variety of clerical duties as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Supports inclusion and collaboration programs. E
Assists teachers in carrying out behavior modification programs. E
Projects a mature, constructive, stable, and healthy (positive) attitude in a learning environment. E
Identifies learning needs of children and provides emotional support, friendly attitudes, and general guidance. E
Assists the principals and teachers in supervising pupil behavior in accordance with adapted school standards. E
Assists pupils in the process of being served and seated in lunch areas. E
Remains informed of special medical needs or problems of students. E
Assists students with social, hygienic and prevocational skills. E
Assists students with toileting needs. E
Adapts methods of instruction to meet the individual needs of students. E
Assists in the development of a variety of instructional materials. E
Facilitates and augments communication systems with and without specialized equipment, as needed. E
Attends I.E.P. meetings, as necessary. E
Provides instruction to students with special needs and identified learning disabilities in various classroom settings. E
Provides assistance in all aspects of the care and education of those students who have special needs, including health related needs. E
Adapts methods of instruction to meet the individual needs. E
Prepares instructional materials as directed by the teacher and other support staff; monitors and scores a variety of tests. E
Tutors individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitors and assists special education students in prescriptive learning activities. E
Utilizes behavior modification techniques and multisensory instructional strategies to improve the academic skills of students with learning disabilities or other related problems. E
Observes and controls behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior. E
Oversees student activities including field trips as required; supervises playground activities as assigned. E
Performs a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers, and recording grades. E
Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits; operates audiovisual equipment; operates education training equipment; and distributes and collects paper, supplies, and materials. E
Confers with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs. E
Assures the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures. E
Directs group activities of students as assigned. E
Maintains confidentiality. E
Participates in staff meetings and inservice training programs on a regular basis. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Child guidance principles and practices related to students with learning disabilities.
Basic subjects taught in district schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Recordkeeping techniques.
Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Operate office machines and keyboard equipment.
ABILITY TO:
Work independently.
Assist with instruction in prescriptive learning activities in a regular education learning environment.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward children with special needs.
Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining records.
Print and write legibly.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Learn the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties.

Read, interpret and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.

ASSIGNMENT LOCATION:
May be assigned to more than one site during the workday; time/site can be adjusted during the work year depending on need of students.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school, and one-year experience in working with school-age children in an organized setting.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Classroom environment and office environment; subject to constant interruptions.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Hearing and speaking to students, bending, kneeling, standing for long periods, and vision to observe students.

*Must have successfully passed the Paraprofessional Special Ed. II test to be qualified for an interview (if not currently in that position) *Previous experience as a Paraprofessional Special Ed. II preferred.
