With schools dating back to the 1870s, the award-winning Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) is now the 16th largest school district in California. RUSD educates nearly 42,000 students across 50 schools in Riverside. The District serves a large portion of Riverside as well as the unincorporated areas of Highgrove and Woodcrest. RUSD is led by its 12th Superintendent, Ms. Renee Hill and is governed by a Board of Education comprised of publicly elected officials who serve five different trustee areas.

Requirements / Qualifications

Under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent, the Director of Special Education will be responsible for the effective planning, implementation and evaluation of the District’s special education program; develop and implement policies and the local plan for special education. This position requires subject matter expertise in special education programs, curriculum and instruction strategies, behavior intervention, budget development and the laws that drive special education services for students with disabilities.


ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide general supervision and evaluation of the district wide special education services, programs, budget, staffing, compliance and due process.
  • Assist schools in on-going special education services implementation, monitoring, review and revision.
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned managers and staff.
  • Supervise development of all required due process procedures; schedule and implement appropriate participation at the Resolution Session, mediation and Due Process Hearing process. Implement Informal Dispute Resolution as requested by parents.
  • Develop the Special Education Staffing, attend and report at District Staffing Meetings.
  • Develop budget and prepare Board Agenda items regarding approval of expenditures as needed.
  • Prepare Board Agenda items as needed for area of Special Education.
  • Implement proactive measures to promote positive relationships with parents and counteract due process activity.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Possession of a valid California Administrative Credential.
  • Valid California Credential with English Learners Certification.
  • Three years of administrative experience in the public-school system, including responsible experience related to special education.
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university in a directly-related area to school administration, curriculum, or special education.
  • Any combination of training and experience that will enhance successful service to the District in this role.
