Job Summary

Under supervision, performs a wide range of clerical and secretarial tasks at an elementary or secondary school, relieving supervisor of routine administrative and clerical detail. Typical duties will include, but are not limited to, preparing a variety of typewritten material, including correspondence, budget material, schedules and reports, conferring with parents regarding student attendance and welfare, obtaining substitute personnel, assisting in attendance work, making arrangements for and coordinating use of school facilities by school groups or outside organizations, maintaining student and school files and records, preparing bank deposits and disbursing funds from petty cash. Other duties will include preparing attendance and other reports, operating duplicating equipment, maintaining confidentiality of student records, administering first aid to students, cross-training in other job classifications in the school office complex, and supervising student assistants when assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: - Modern office methods, equipment and practices, including filing systems, receptionist and telephone techniques and letter and report writing; - English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; - Basic computer input and retrieval methods. AND Ability to: - Interpret and apply District rules and policies which govern school activities; - Perform responsible clerical work with accuracy and speed; - Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action; - Meet the public tactfully and courteously in situations requiring diplomacy and firmness; - Make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; - Type at a speed of 40 WPM from clear copy; - Take dictation at a speed of 80 WPM and transcribe it accurately (may not be required in all assignments); - Obtain a Red Cross first aid certificate; - Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work. AND Training and experience; - Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be:Three years of increasingly responsible and varied experience in clerical work, preferably including frequent contact with the public. Physical Abilities: Requires sufficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to use a computer keyboard. Requires prolonged typing and data entry. Requires frequent sitting. Requires sufficient visual acuity to read words, letters and numbers. Requires auditory and speaking ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat and reach above/below shoulder level to pull materials from files and shelves. Frequently lifts and carries up to 10 pounds; occasionally lifts and carries up to 30 pounds.
