CLASS TITLE: TRANSPORTATION DISPATCHER/ROUTER
BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, organize bus routes and bus schedules for students; gather and evaluate information regarding time schedules, loads and routes; coordinate and schedule routes, assignments and equipment for bus drivers for field trips and special events; communicate driving and training assignments to bus drivers, keeping them informed of any adjustments and/or changes, maintaining related records and reports; communicate with parents and the general community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

? Organize and coordinate bus routes and bus schedules. (E1)
? May participate in IEP meetings, if necessary. (E1)
? Perform field check of routes, and bus stops; assess problem bus stops regarding safety and other concerns including those for special needs students, as needed. (E1)
? Operate a two-way radio to communicate. Dispatch and assist in coordinating routing and student overloads. (E1)
? Schedule substitute bus drivers and proctors, assigning them to their proper route and schedule.(E1)
? Coordinate and schedule routes, assignments and equipment for field trips, special events and changes. (E1)
? Assist with department operational issues including establishing routes and schedules; collect data for use in departmental planning, as needed. (E2)
? Coordinates availability of buses. (E2)
? Drive a variety of school buses over designated routes on a substitute or temporary basis, as needed. (E2)
? Utilize transportation related software programs. (E2)
? Communicate with parents and students to resolve issues involving bus misconduct warnings, tickets and denial of transportation; assist with parent calls and complaints. (E2)
? Assist in conducting in-service training programs for bus drivers. (E3)
? Perform other related duties, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A. High School diploma or equivalent.
B. Three (3) years of increasingly responsible school bus driving experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
- Current First Aid Certification or CHP equivalent.
- Current CPR Certification or CHP equivalent.
- A valid California Class B Driver’s License.
- School Bus Drivers’ Certificate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Current DMV Medical Certificate issued by a Health Care Professional.
- Current DMV K4 printout upon completion of application.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Safe operation of school buses.
- Applicable laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of school buses, including pertinent
sections of the Department of Transportation, California Vehicle Code and the California Highway
Patrol (CHP) regulations.
- Methods of scheduling bus routes and vehicles.
- Principles and practices of safe driving.
- Two-way radio communications.
- Vehicle inspection procedures.
- Record-keeping techniques.
- Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
- Telephone etiquette.

ABILITY TO:
- Gather accurate data, schedule bus drivers, routes, vehicles and other bus trips in an effective and timely manner.
- Adhere to schedules and timelines
- Understand, interpret, apply and explain, the District’s organizational structure, operations, policies and procedures.
- Operate a two-way radio; dispatch bus drivers, as needed.
- Operate modern office equipment and related software
- Maintain records and prepare and submit reports, as required.

- Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices
- Perform required vehicle inspections.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

- Lift, move, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Transportation area and/or school bus operation environment.
- Subject to demanding time lines and constant interruptions.
- Occasionally exposed to outside weather and loud noise conditions.
HAZARDS:
- Exposure to diesel and exhaust fumes.
- Sitting for an extended period of time.
- Subject to angry or disgruntled people.
