Serves as day custodian at an assigned school site. Provides work direction to the night custodian.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.  Assigns work and provides work direction to night custodian at assigned school site.

 Reviews work of night crew.

 Inspects completed work for accuracy and compliance to instructions and established

standards.

 Inspects assigned areas for sanitary and safety hazards.

 Performs custodial and cleaning duties for assigned schools, classrooms, buildings and other facilities.

 

 Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors.

 Vacuums rugs and carpets, replaces light bulbs and lighting tubes

 Cleans desks, tabletops and chalkboards.

 Sets up and takes down gym or multi-purpose rooms for sports and activities.

 Sets up bleachers and benches for school activities.

 Inspects fire extinguishers.

 Performs minor non-journey level maintenance.

 Picks up paper and debris.

 Maintains clean walkways.

 Reports maintenance needs to appropriate department.

 Operates a variety of specialized custodial equipment.

 Requisitions cleaning and custodial supplies and materials. Maintains simple records.

 Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to authorities.

 Submits work orders for general maintenance.

 Locks and unlocks doors/gates & sets security system.

 Checks boilers, furnaces, heaters and light systems as needed.

 Confers with Maintenance Supervisor and Director of Maintenance and Operations regarding custodial maintenance projects and activities at assigned site, serves as interim supervisor when required.

 Performs related duties as required.

 DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Lead Custodian works days.  The Lead Custodian receives supervision from the School Site Administrator.  The Lead Custodian performs non-journey level minor maintenance within building and maintains walk and entrance ways outside building.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of custodial work

Supply requisitioning and records maintenance

Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment

Safe use and operation of equipment and materials used in janitorial and custodial work

 Ability to:

Provide technical leadership in custodial work

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Keep simple records, order supplies

Maintain effective working relationships with other people

Provide work direction

 EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE  Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

 High School Diploma or G.E.D. Equivalency and Two years experience as a custodian.

 LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid California driver’s license

Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate may be required

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS Heavy physical effort which may include extensive standing or walking; frequent lifting or moving of heavy parcels, machines or equipment weighing 50 or more pounds; frequent activities require full body exertion.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and uses personal vehicle and occasionally works evenings.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency is required. Any combination of experience and education that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities are strongly preferred.
