Job Summary

Job Summary

School & College Legal Services of California (SCLS) has an immediate opening for a full-time attorney in its Santa Rosa, California office. This position reports to the General Counsel. The attorney in this role will primarily provide a wide range of legal advice and services to public school districts and community colleges centered on facilities and public contracting, including solar projects and clean energy, as well as general business matters. Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate - Experience in TK-12 education law and policy in California, particularly in any of the following areas: public contracting, public facilities, general business matters. - Experience in advising public entities with governance matters, the California Public Records Act, and the Ralph M. Brown Act. - Experience in representing clients in administrative hearings and/or before the court, and comfort with hearing procedures and rules. - Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to inform strategy and adopt or recommend creative, effective courses of action, including the ability to conduct a risk assessment for each action. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information to a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings) in both written and verbal forms.

Required Qualifications - Knowledge of: Legal principles and procedures, including civil and administrative law and procedures; court rules and rules of evidence; methods of legal research, including computer research. - Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; research legal problems and prepare sound legal opinions; establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with other employees, clients and members of the public. - Required Experience and Education: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Possession of a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school or the equivalent is required. - License & Certification: This position requires active membership in the State Bar of California. Individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C, California Driver's License, OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled or unscheduled visits to various locations which may or may not be reachable by public transportation. This position will require the successful candidate to also provide a list of references, submit to a criminal background check, and submit proof of TB clearance. Compensation is $118,908 (1,400 billable commitment) - $144,536 (1,600 billable commitment). - Associate General Counsel II - Three to six years of experience. Compensation is $132,172 (1,400 billable commitment) - $157,798 (1,600 billable commitment). - Associate General Counsel III - Six to eight years of experience. Compensation is $162,156 (1,400 billable commitment) - $170,785 (1,600 billable commitment). - Senior Associate General Counsel - Eight or more years of experience in school and/or municipal law. Compensation is $151,345 (1,400 billable commitment) - $183,780 (1,600 billable commitment).
