Job Summary

The Personnel Commission of the Los Angeles Unified School District is seeking highly qualified Hearing Officers. Compensation will be: $1,500 per hearing day; $2,500 per reasoned decision (flat rate); and $500 for late cancellation of less than 72 hours. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), is the nation’s second largest public school system, and employs 31,800 classified employees (non-teaching employees) in approximately 1,100 job classifications. The Personnel Commission is an independent civil service commission. The Personnel Commission and its staff are responsible for adjudicating appeals of disciplinary actions. The Personnel Commission employs Hearing Officers to preside over disciplinary appeals hearings. Hearings Officers determine whether due process was provided; rule on the admissibility of evidence; and recommend findings of fact and dispositions of appeals for consideration by the Personnel Commission. They serve as objective, neutral, third parties with no bias toward management or labor. IDEAL CANDIDATES SHOULD POSSESS: • Trial, mediation, arbitration, and/or hearing experience and a strong commitment to due process, justice, and fairness • Strong interpersonal skills and positive regard for persons from a wide range of backgrounds • Skills in determining relevancy, credibility of testimony and strength of evidence • Knowledge of procedures used in administrative hearings, due process, and rules of evidence • Superior writing skills to provide cogent and logical reports • At least five years of successful experience conducting arbitrations or administrative hearings in the field of labor and personnel relations or employee discipline • Membership to National Arbitrators Association (preferred) • Law Degree (preferred) • Knowledge of California Education Code/Merit System (preferred) Highly qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a selection interview.
