DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to do skilled journeyman-level work in the preparation of surfaces for painting and in the mixing and application of paints; and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Uses brush, roller or spray gun in applying paint, varnish, shellac, synthetic, lacquer, or other protective or decorative finishes to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, stucco, wallboard, brick, asphalt and cement; sandblast, sashing (power or hand), etches (acid or other products), scrapes, sands, fills, blends, harmonizes and contrasts colors; applies primer and finish coats; sizes and tints and stripes lines on pavement, stencils, sign painting; erects, rigs or moves scaffolding and platforms; clean brushes, tools, and other equipment, may supervise the work of trainees.
Knowledge of:
The tools, materials, and standard practices of the painting trade;
The methods of preparing different surfaces for painting and repainting by both brush and spray gun methods.
Ability to:
Mix and apply paints;
Erect and work from riggings and scaffolding;
Follow verbal and written directions.
Experience:
Four years of responsible painting experience. Qualified journeyman in building trades.
Education:
High school education or equivalent in training experience. Building trades apprenticeship program.
License:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle.
