Theater Arts Teacher – Grades K through 8 at Adda Clevenger School
Job Summary
Job Summary
Adda Clevenger School is an independent TK-8 school offering an accelerated academic curriculum plus a fully integrated performing arts program for San Francisco Bay Area school children. Our constructivist educational program is inspired by the child-centric experientialist philosophy of John Dewey. Our school day consists of a dual curriculum of arts and academics, and students from as early as TK move through subject matter with different teachers on a period rotation throughout the day. The Adda Clevenger School is excited to open a second San Francisco campus starting Fall 2025 and we are beginning the search for a full or part time Theater Arts Teacher for primary and middle school grades K-8. The Theater Arts Teacher is responsible for instructing students in acting techniques, developing their performance skills, and guiding them through the process of creating theatrical productions, including selecting plays, casting roles, directing rehearsals, and overseeing technical aspects like set design, lighting, and sound, all while fostering creativity, communication, and confidence in their students; they may also incorporate playwriting and other forms of dramatic expression into their curriculum.
Requirements / Qualifications
Duties and Responsibilities of the Theater Arts Teacher: • Choosing appropriate plays for student abilities, casting roles, leading rehearsals, providing constructive feedback to actors, and overseeing the technical aspects of a production • Assessing student performances based on criteria like character interpretation, vocal delivery, physical expression, and stage presence • Creating a positive learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and self-expression through drama activities and exercises • Working with colleagues in other departments like art, music, and dance to enhance production quality • Regularly updating parents on student progress and involving them in theatrical productions • Planning, evaluating, and revising curricula, course content, course materials and methods of instruction as part of an ongoing process of improvement • Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students • Evaluating and grading students' class performance • Providing substitute support for other teachers as requested • Assuming responsibility for specified duties which include lunch and playground duty and dismissal and arrival duties • Attending various school functions throughout the year including performing arts programs, field trips, parent-teacher conferences, and evening events
Teaching at Adda Clevenger: The expected course load for a teacher is 5-6 instructional periods per day, rounded out by lunch/recess supervision, advisory duties, after school activities or a second subject, substitute coverage, special projects and prep periods. Our regular school day is from 8:00am -5:00pm and academic classes are scheduled throughout the entire day. Teacher prep takes place during the school day. All teachers participate in school life in a variety of ways. For example, some teachers support student productions and performances as stage managers, others take the lead in organizing Spirit Day activities or moderating a student club. Adda Clevenger teachers enjoy considerable autonomy in their classrooms and are responsible for developing and maintaining their own subject matter curricula. We believe that the teacher and the students are the two critical elements of an effective classroom and the curriculum must derive from and be continually and creatively adapted to their changing needs and environment.
