Job Summary

Teaches one or more classes in the field of social science to students in grades 7 and 8 utilizing the District’s approved curriculum within the scope of the District’s adopted philosophy and goals; assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a standards based program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.

Minimum Qualifications & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
  • Valid California teaching credential authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Must meet highly qualified teacher requirements.
  • Must have knowledge of the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
  • Must have ELL authorization.
  • Must be able to work effectively with administrators, staff, parents, and community.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in social studies to junior high students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
  • Provides individual and group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities being carried on simultaneously.
  • Establishes and maintain standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive learning environment.
  • Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and equipment storage, and controls use of materials and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Evaluates each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and understanding, and prepares progress reports.
  • Selects and requisitions instructional materials, books, etc., and maintains inventory records.
  • Communicates with parents, school administrators, and school counselors on student progress; holds parent conferences to discuss the school program and individual pupil’s progress.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the methods by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines.
  • Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
  • Performs basic attendance accounting as required.
  • Maintains grading system with substantiated grades for students.
  • Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.
