The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County’s most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students. In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. Our Special Education program operates year round and is designed to provide instruction for students between the ages of 3 years and 22 years who have been identified as needing intensive educational service. It is the goal of our program and services to emphasize the teaching of skills that are functional and critical to the needs of our students. Whenever possible, interaction with non-disabled peers is promoted. We emphasize communication, vocational training, and functional academic skills with an emphasis on behavior and technology instructional supports. Our credentialed teachers support the OCDE values and mission statement by providing outstanding educational services in a safe and secure learning environment for all our students. It is the goal of OCDE's Special Education Services Division to provide the most meaningful educational program designed to meet each student’s individual needs. This goal emphasizes the teaching of skills aligned with California State Standards and are critical to the present and future needs of our students. OCDE's Special Education Services Division operates Connections - Empowering Every Learner. Connections has multiple classes on 13 different school sites throughout Orange County. Students are referred to our programs from their district of residence. Educational programs are provided to meet the needs of the following types of students: • Students with extensive support needs • Students with emotional disabilities • Students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH)
Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: • Bachelor's degree or above from a regionally accredited college or university. • Recent experience working with students with severe developmental, physical, behavioral, and/or social-emotional disabilities in an organized setting, preferred. Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements: • Possession and maintenance of a valid California teaching credential authorizing instruction in Special Education for students with Moderate/Severe Disabilities. • Meet the Basic Skills Requirement through one of the methods listed on Form CL-667 on the California CTC website - www.ctc.ca.gov. • English Learner (EL) Authorization: All new teachers hired under a Preliminary or Clear credential must possess an authorization to provide instruction for English Language Development (ELD) and Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) to English learners. Appropriate credentials include Education Specialist Instruction Credential with an English Learner authorization; CLAD (Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development) or BCLAD (Bilingual Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development) authorizations; or Certificate of Completion of Staff Development (AB2913/SB395 training).
