THE DEPARTMENT
The Computer Science department is an innovator in teaching computer science. Its programs offer a full range of courses in computer science, networking, and security. Hartnell College's Computer Science program offers an Associate of Science and Certificate of Completion, provides students with transfer preparation, and prepares students with prerequisite knowledge for other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses. The Computer Science faculty work collaboratively with their STEM colleagues at Hartnell and their Computer Science colleagues at 4- year institutions to foster student success. Hartnell College's STEM programs have been awarded multiple Title V, NSF, NASA, and private grants. Through these grants, Hartnell College has provided students with opportunities for improved academic success, undergraduate research experience, and internships.
THE POSITIONUnder the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the Computer Science instructor will be responsible for providing instruction in networking and security computer science classes, including network security, system and network administration, storage management, cloud computing, LINUX/UNIX command line and scripting, computer repair, and introduction to programming and computer science. All faculty in the Computer Science department are expected to be able to successfully teach in all of the course areas listed, as well as foster student interest and learning in these fields. This assignment may include teaching at any of the college's campus sites; day, evening, or weekend classes; distance learning (hybrid); and using multiple teaching methodologies. This position requires teaching classes in person at any Hartnell College campuses/centers and possibly in the Rising Scholars program. Assignments may also include online/hybrid formats.
Examples of Duties
• Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct lecture and lab courses as assigned;• Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, evaluate, and deliver classroom instruction and related activities, including developing and revising curriculum; using computer and advanced technologies in instruction; and maintaining currency in the field;• Offer student advising and assistance;• Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;• Develop and file appropriate syllabi for each course taught, ensuring that each syllabus conforms to the required and approved curriculum, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and reflects currency in the field;• Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment, to the dean;• Keep students informed about their progress through the prompt• evaluation and grading of papers and other work;• Maintain and report accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records;• Participate in program and curriculum review and development;• Develop and assess student learning and program-level outcomes;• Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning;• Post and maintain office hours for student consultations;• Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs;• Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;• Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;• Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;• Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;• Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;• Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in computer science or computer engineering
OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND a Master's degree in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting, or engineering
OR Bachelor's degree in engineering AND master's in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration
OR Bachelor's degree in mathematics AND master's in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration
OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in information science, computer information systems, or information systems
OR the equivalent.

Preference may be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the community college level.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and experience in programming or networking, and security.
Preference may be given to candidates with master's degree in computer science or computer engineering.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;Full-time, tenure-track Computer Science faculty position.The starting faculty salary range is $70,608.00 to $149,154.00 annually based on 175 days per academic year. The successful candidate's starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. Hiring & Selection ProcessA select group of candidates will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews, which will take place on the Hartnell College campus in Salinas, CA. The first round will involve a panel interview with faculty, staff, and the Dean. During this round, candidates will be asked to deliver a teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided upon receipt of the interview invitation. Additionally, candidates will respond to a series of scripted questions. These questions will be made available for review 30 minutes before the interview. We anticipate conducting the first-round interviews during the first three weeks of April 2025.Candidates selected for the second round of interviews will meet with the college president and vice president. This round may also include a 50-minute teaching demonstration delivered to a group of Hartnell College students. The second-round interviews are expected to occur in the last week of April or early May.The final decision regarding the outcome of the interview process will be made in mid-May.
