Perform a variety of duties both in and out of the classroom and play an active role in caring for the behavior and learning needs of the students; the behavioral assistant may utilize independent judgment in performing tasks and duties which will vary according to the environment and/or student needs; contact with students is continuous and often intense. Assignments may include working in more than one environment and with multiple students; positions in this classification are established principally to assist teachers and students in completing instructional tasks and in meeting behavioral goals; incumbents perform their tasks with initiative and independent judgment within a limited number of standardized procedures; the duties and responsibilities listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to this position; this list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all of the tasks assigned to this position, and it is not expected that all of the tasks listed be necessarily assigned to all positions in the class; the duties and responsibilities of the assignment may vary; Provides instruction, as directed by a teacher to individuals or small groups in a variety of areas including cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, self-help skills and behavior control; assists students arriving and leaving classrooms; monitors and records behavior on the school bus; assists teachers in maintaining the health and safety of special education students by being aware of the environment and the potential hazards of each student’s actions; assists the teacher according to established guidelines and procedures; utilizes approved behavior management techniques to redirect inappropriate behaviors; observes and records student behavior; assists in implementing behavior plans and behavioral goals and objectives; may be required to operate lifts, secure students on bus, attend field trips, ride with student on bus, and assist handicapped students with equipment; Knowledge of: basic methods and techniques used to work effectively with students; general needs and behavior patterns of students at the level to which assigned; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; technology and appropriate software applications; typing, filing, and other clerical skills; basic arithmetical computations; Ability to: project a mature, constructive, stable attitude in a learning environment; read and comprehend written materials proficiently; establish and maintain effective communication and personal relationships with students, parents, and staff; learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without close and immediate supervision; understand the basic concepts of child growth and development; perform a variety of routine clerical duties; operate a typewriter/keyboard and operate or learn to operate other standard office equipment; use appropriate technology effectively; operate or learn to operate audio-visual equipment.

The Baldwin Park Unified School District is recruiting for Behavioral Assistants - Special Education. Under the direction of a Special Education Teacher or other certificated employee. The employee will assist in implementing the instructional and behavioral programs for students' special needs. The employee will also assist with the management of both individual students and groups of students on the school campus, in the classroom, or on the school bus. Baldwin Park Unified School District offers an exceptional benefits package (medical, dental, vision, and membership in the CalPERS retirement system).
The selection process tentatively consists of the District application review, pass the District instructional proficiency exam, and interviews. The Human Resources Department will contact all applicants once the selection process has been finalized. Emails will be sent to all applicants and only qualified applicants will be given the exam and interview information. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: (a) A high school diploma or equivalent is required (b) Pass the BPUSD district instructional aide examination (c) Or completion of at least two years of study at an institution of higher education or an associate’s degree or higher in lieu of taking the BPUSD exam (must provide proof) Experience: Experience working with children with students with disabilities. REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES Possess current First Aid and CPR certification issued by an authorized agency. Employees must attend training(s) provided by the District upon recommendation.
