AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the general supervision of immediate supervisor, performs basic repair and maintenance of District automobiles, trucks and buses with diesel and/or gasoline engines. Also works on small gasoline motors. Performs related duties as required/assigned.



SAMPLE TASKS AND FUNCTIONS:

· Using appropriate tools and equipment as required, inspects, tests, repairs, maintains, and services a variety of District vehicles and engines.
· Repairs and maintains a variety of small engines such as those in lawn mowers, concrete mixers and other district equipment.
· Installs, replaces, or repairs valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, controls, thermostats, switches, gauges, tubing, pipes and other related items.
· Fabricates, repairs and installs chassis covers; connects motor to control panels and control panels to power.
· Inspects, disassembles, repairs and maintains vehicular heating and air conditioning equipment.
· Requisitions appropriate materials; plans assigned tasks; requests and organizes materials and parts on an on-going basis.
· Maintains current inventory of mechanical parts and materials.
· Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

· Ability to read, understand and work from simple diagrams and schematics.
· Ability to work effectively and efficiently with peers.
· Demonstrates a continual ability to learn to perform a wide range of mechanical skills.
· Demonstrates knowledge of cost effective maintenance.
· Demonstrates knowledge of vehicle repair and the proper procedures/strategies needed to facilitate cost effective maintenance.
· Demonstrates the ability to understand and execute oral and written directions.
· Demonstrates ability to work effectively and efficiently with peers.
· Demonstrates ability to keep accurate records and to make reports in a timely manner.


SKILLS:

· Under direction, demonstrates the ability to plan and lay out assigned tasks, keeps time labor and material records; requisitions, orders and stores parts and materials.
· Demonstrates knowledge of the proper use of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of district vehicles and equipment; use of appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
· Performs and continues to learn to perform a wide range of mechanical skills requiring full journeyman skill.
· Operates automobiles, trucks, buses, observing legal and defensive driving practices
· Demonstrates knowledge of the proper use of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks and buses.
· Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Pass a District proficiency test or have proof of relevant AA degree.
· Must submit current resume and any qualifying certifications.
· Maintains valid California Driver’s License.
· Maintains good, insurable driving record.
· Equivalent to a high school diploma,
AND
A minimum of three years prior experience repair and maintaining school district vehicles is desirable;
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Valid CHP First Aide Certificate (Preferred)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and a computer keyboard
· Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
· Hearing and speaking to exchange information
