Requirements / Qualifications

Requirements for Employment: •Identification (i.e. driver's license and Social Security, or the equivalent). •Fingerprints •Negative TB test •Proof of current college enrollment or graduate from an accredited University. •All AVID tutors are required to attend a training workshop at the Riverside County Office of Education. Additionally, advanced level workshops will be scheduled throughout employment for experienced tutors to attain AVID Certification. These trainings will provide the background necessary for beginning tutors as well as enhance the experience of returning AVID tutors. Tutors will practice AVID methodologies, including writing to learn, inquiry, and collaboration. Participants will role-play tutorial situations and share tips about working with students and organizing the classroom. Tutors will also learn how to help students with college admissions and financial aid applications and how to help them prepare for college entrance tests (SAT and ACT).
Training, Education and Experience: •High School degree or recognized equivalent •Currently enrolled in college • Knowledge in a variety of math (preferred) •Currently working on a four-year undergraduate degree, graduate degree or a graduate from an accredited University. •AVID Tutors should be excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that the AVID students can and will succeed. The tutors should represent balanced academic backgrounds, some liberal arts majors, others science or mathematics majors. The tutors should be people who will work in a supportive manner with secondary students and will be able to understand the position they will occupy; they are advocates of students, yet ultimately, they are responsible to the teacher. They must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the coordinator/teacher about future plans. Hours and Compensation: •Tutors commit to meeting during the AVID classes on Tutorial and Binder Check Days.
