Keeps District’s school buses and automotive equipment in state of operating excellence so that they present no problems or interruptions to educational programs. Work Hours: 8 Hours/Day - 12 month position, Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications & Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • California State Driver’s license – Class B or higher.
  • California State School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
  • Completion of a school bus driver training program.
  • Current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Safe driving record and one (1) year of experience in the transportation of school children preferred.
  • Four (4) years of journeyman level experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification desired.
  • Knowledge of principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, material, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
  • Knowledge of the District boundaries and geography.
  • Familiar with bus operations according to state, federal, and district regulations.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and make necessary repairs to mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to use required tools and equipment safely and skillfully.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to plan and estimate needs and to operate a garage efficiently within budget limitations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with school employees and administrators.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Good physical condition as determined by pre-employment physical relative to the physical requirements of the job.

 
Essential Functions: 

  • Performs skilled level mechanical repair and maintenance on large school buses and other District automotive and grounds keeping equipment, and does related work as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects on school buses, light trucks, automobiles, and other gasoline/diesel operated mechanical equipment.
  • Ensures all District vehicles meet safety requirements and smog certification.
  • Inspects District mechanical equipment; plans and carries out a preventative maintenance program.
  • Makes minor body and fender repairs.
  • Keeps records of work performed.
  • Advises on matters related to safe transportation.
  • Lubricates and services equipment.
  • Coordinates special repair work with contractors.
  • Makes contact with parts dealers and refers to catalogs to order needed parts and supplies.
  • Makes emergency road calls.
  • Maintains shop in clean and orderly condition.
  • When not engaged in above activities or when needed, assists as required in a variety of maintenance work throughout the District involving heavy labor and semi-skilled and skilled tasks.
  • Drives school bus as a relief driver as needed.
  • Responsible for establishing and assigning routes to bus drivers, including substitutes.
  • Monitors driving assignments, including field trips.
  • Monitors checkpoints and communicates to determine fog delays.
  • Monitors drug/alcohol testing of bus drivers, and maintains drug/alcohol testing files.
  • Monitors Bus Driver Certifications – current medical, special licenses, and certificates – to ensure correct/current documents are on file.
  • Be available as needed after normal working hours for emergency break downs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.
