PLEASE BE PREPARED TO REMAIN IN THE TESTING ROOM FOR THE ENTIRE TEST PERIOD. THIS IS THE ONLY NOTICE OF THE TESTING.

Jurupa Unified School District PAYROLL SPECIALIST DEFINITION Under supervision to perform a variety of complex clerical work involving the maintenance of various financial, payroll, and statistical records. This position is responsible for clerical and record keeping functions relating to payroll accounting. The work is differentiated from that of Account Clerk in that a greater degree of independent judgment and a higher level of skill in record keeping is required. It also requires more responsibility in the handling of discrete payroll records such as payroll warrants. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS · Prepares district payrolls, reports, and related documents. · Posts, assembles, tabulates, computes, compares, and files financial data, applying standard formulas and using predetermined guides. · Creates and maintains accurate computer and other records for each employee. · Monitors adherence to laws, policies, and good accounting practice relating to payroll accounting. · Applies both classified and certificated rules and regulations in determining payments and maintaining records. · Reviews and analyzes payroll data including computer listings and printouts and microfilm records. · Computes and initiates adjustments for correction of salary payment and deductions. · Maintains leave, payroll, and other records. · Operates a variety of office machines including typewriter, computer, calculator, microfilm equipment, etc. · Prepares, changes, and audits payroll data retained in computer. · Answers correspondence and inquiries regarding assignment data, time-reporting methods, leave balances, and rules and regulations regarding payroll matters. · May contact other agencies, schools, and businesses to arrange and discuss matters relating to payroll. · Works under considerable or extreme pressure of deadlines and work volume. · Exercises independent judgment with regard to financial matters. · Provides discrete payroll information, as authorized by subpoena or supervisor, to loan companies, courts, public agencies, and other units of the district. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS · Performs other related duties as required. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic methods, terminology and practices of bookkeeping, payroll and financial record keeping; General office practices and the operation of office machines; Arithmetic, filing and records checking; Basic computer operation. Ability to: Follow oral and written instructions; Complete routine tasks willingly; Personnel Services (over) PAYROLL SPECIALIST Ability to (continued): Perform general and statistical clerical work; Make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy; Work with a minimum of supervision; Remain flexible under the pressure of a heavy work load and critical deadlines; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Read and comprehend handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various equipment and machines; Communicate effectively; Sit for sustained periods of time; Concentrate on current task in spite of distractions in an active, busy environment; Efficiently and effectively operate office machines, including a computer with keyboard and monitor, for sustained periods of time; Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate calculator, typewriter, and/or computer keyboard at the required speed and accuracy; Maintain regular, steady attendance. Skills: Typing: 45 words per minute; Operate adding, calculating and other business machines. Experience: Two years of experience in a position requiring a basic knowledge of accounting, payroll and/or fiscal record keeping procedures and terminology. Education: Graduation from high school, preferably including or supplemented by courses in financial record keeping. Personal Qualities: Affinity for accuracy; willingness to accept responsibility; maturity; pleasant and friendly demeanor; and the ability to work effectively under pressure with frequent to constant interruptions.
