DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to do skilled journeyman-level welding work in the erection and repair of metal fixtures, machinery, buildings, and other structures; and to do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Designs and lays out work from sketches, blueprints or job requisitions; fabricates metal by cutting, shaping, drilling, and welding with both electric and gas welding equipment; repairs and rebuilds metal fixtures, structural parts of buildings, machinery, playground equipment and other metal structures; from rough descriptions, fabricates new parts or modifies parts of automotive equipment, playground equipment, shop machinery, building fixtures, and maintenance equipment to meet special purpose needs; drives a light truck to and from maintenance jobs; may assist a small crew in erecting wire fences; keeps records of field maintenance jobs completed and makes reports; may supervise the work of trainees. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: The tools, materials, and standard practices of the welding trade; The properties of various metals and proper heat treating and tempering methods. Ability to: Read blueprints and to build and forge metal parts and drawings a rough descriptions; Use gas and electric welding and cutting equipment; Follow verbal and written directions; Safely operate a light truck; Keep simple records and prepare reports. Experience: Two years of responsible welding experience. Qualified journeyman. Education: High school education or equivalent in training and experience.
