Under general direction of a site principal or librarian and using automated library systems, the Library Technician performs a variety of technical library duties requiring specialized knowledge of library methods and procedures. This position differs from the Library Clerk position in that more independent judgment is exercised in the application of standard practices and procedures.

*Assists students, staff and others in locating and selecting appropriate library, reference and research materials, including computer and on-line resources.
*Informs students of the proper use of library resources and assists in the development of their library skills.
*Monitors and maintains order within the library; enforces rules and discipline procedures according to established procedures.
*Checks books, periodicals and library materials in and out at the circulation desk; scans bar-coded books and materials; processes and shelves returned books.
*Catalogs, classifies, processes and sorts books, library materials and records, entering information into a computerized database; compiles and maintains statistical records and reports.
*Reviews and updates records on collection and shelf list.
*Orders books and other library materials; prepares purchase orders and requisitions; processes new purchases into the computerized database.
*Cleans, repairs, labels and covers materials; discards materials according to established guidelines and procedures.
*Undertakes annual inventory of all books.
*Establishes and maintains records of overdue materials and sends notices to students; collects fines of overdue, damaged and lost books.
*Prepares appropriate library displays; maintains a clean and orderly environment.
*Handles billings and invoices on orders for library materials.
*Orients and supervises student workers in library procedures.
*Composes related correspondence.
*Administers first aid.
Performs other related duties.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (At time of application)
Knowledge of library services, techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of or ability to learn automated library systems.
Knowledge of or ability to learn on-line reference resources.
Knowledge of classification systems.
Knowledge of audio-visual materials.
Knowledge of good English, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to prepare and use files and records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with staff and students.
Ability to work independently without close supervision.
Ability to operate a computer terminal and to use word processing and database software.
Ability to troubleshoot and provide minor maintenance to library computer systems.
Ability to type or keyboard with speed and accuracy (25 WPM required, 40 WPM desired).
Ability to assist students in selecting books and other materials.
Ability to apply library rules, regulations and policies.
Ability to train and supervise helpers.
Ability to obtain First Aid certification.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of increasingly responsible library experience or a certificate in library science from a two year college program. Experience in working with school-age children.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (May be performed with or without reasonable accommodation)
Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from
students, supervisors, co-workers, the public, etc.
Work under pressure to complete a variety of written reports within specific timelines.
Sufficient coordination and dexterity to operate school office equipment (includes computers, terminals, printers, copiers, etc.) as required by the position.
