Basic Functions: Under general supervision of the Librarian, independently perform technical library functions at a secondary school site, including a variety of responsible and technical duties related to the processing and circulation of books and instructional media materials in the middle school/junior high library media center including operation of computerized systems; oversee technical operations and train students in equipment operation and related techniques; support instructional tasks initiated by the supervisor; and to perform all other related duties as assigned. Education & Experience: Two years of library or closely related clerical experience, preferably including some experience in an educational setting, or equivalent to the completion of an Associate of Arts degree or certificate in library media technology; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Handles and supervises the circulation procedures, including preparing overdue notices, and keeping records of equipment loans and returns. Maintains record keeping for all money collected from and refunded to library patrons, including copy machine, computer print-out and petty cash. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Class Title: Library Technician
Basic Function:
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of clerical and technical duties in a high school library; and to perform all other related duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties:
Types letters, reports, invoices, requisitions, cards, lists, and other materials from copy, draft, and machine recordings.
Processes library materials with suitable property markings, jacketing, packaging, and storing.
Checks books, audio-visual equipment, and other instructional resources in and out of the library.
Handles and supervises the circulation procedures, including preparing overdue notices, and keeping records of equipment loans and returns.
Maintains and updates library and departmental shelf lists.
May assist students and teachers in researching, identifying, and/or locating library media, text materials, and equipment.
May assist students in learning library skills.
Prepares work schedules for student assistants and parent volunteers.
Performs repairs on library materials and sends the more complex repairs out.
Prepares displays.
May assist in the preparation of subject matter bibliographies.
May be asked to operate and maintain in good repair a variety of audio-visual equipment.
Receives, verifies, processes, distributes, inventories, and stores shipments of library books, audio-visual equipment, and related instructional materials.
Orders and keeps records on school magazine subscriptions and inventories.
May be asked to assist the textbook technician with issuing and collecting textbooks.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Modern office methods, practices, and procedures.
Correct English usage, spelling, and penmanship.
Basic process involved in ordering, receiving, placing, and issuing materials and books.
Library Technician
Knowledge of:
Basic library terminology and standard library practices, including the Dewey Decimal System.
Library media concepts, vocabulary, and artistic expression.
Basic principles of cataloging and organizing library materials.
Principles of supervision and training.
Ability to:
Perform clerical work using independent judgment.
Apply specific rules and procedures used in a library setting.
Operate standard office machines, including a computer terminal and a variety of audio-visual equipment.
Make minor repairs to a variety of audio-visual equipment and books.
Understand, carry out, and give oral and written instructions.
Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Type accurately from clear copy.
Education and Experience:
