MAINTENANCE I

DEFINITION:
The Maintenance I position, under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, requires
the performance of a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on
District buildings, facilities and equipment, independently or on an assigned maintenance crew.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Performs simple maintenance repairs or replacements within the crafts of plumbing,
heating, painting, carpentry, electricity, metalwork, masonry and mechanical fields.
• Performs more complex repairs or replacements in at least one craft.
• Assists Maintenance Tradespersons in completing work for which the Maintenance
Tradesperson is responsible.
• Accomplishes tasks requiring the use of standard materials and common
maintenance tools.
• Performs semi-skilled manual tasks.
• Reads simple sketches and drawings.
• Performs preventive maintenance service to buildings and equipment as assigned.
• Reports to supervisor unsafe and otherwise adverse conditions that exist.
• Performs related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Methods, equipment and materials used in general maintenance work.
• Requirements of maintaining buildings, and facilities in good repair.
• Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Perform general maintenance and repair with minimal supervision.
• Drive District vehicle.
• Observe health and safety regulations.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Two years of maintenance experience.
• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
• Forklift certification may be required.
• Experience and knowledge in two or more crafts desirable.
• Special training or coursework desirable.

ladders, stairs, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods. There
may also be regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, cleaning agents and chemicals. Exposure
to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be
experienced. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
