ALTA LOMA SCHOOL DISTRICT GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER DEFINITION Under general supervision, to skillfully operate a variety of light and heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment; to perform complex grounds maintenance and gardening functions and activities; and to do other related work as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Operate a variety of power grounds equipment, including large gang mowers, tractors, back hoe equipment, man lift boom, trencher, and sweepers. • Perform a variety of specialized functions using a variety of tractor attachments. • Drive a truck with a trailer attachment in transporting heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment from work site to work site. • Service grounds maintenance equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs, and perform a variety of preventative maintenance functions. • Mow large fields and sweep large areas of asphalt and concrete. • Dig trenches for new gas lines, water mains, and electrical lines, and back fill the trenches as the various lines are laid. • Fill, level, smooth, and prepare areas for sidewalks, approaches, slabs, and prepare landscaped areas for the planting of lawns and a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees. • Install and maintain sprinkler and irrigation systems, including the establishment of irrigation schedules. • May spray for weeds and insect control. • Move furniture and equipment, and perform other routine grounds maintenance functions. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Operation, use, and maintenance of light and heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment; Methods, procedures, materials, and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work; Sprinkler and irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair; Planting, propagation, landscaping techniques and procedures; Safe working methods and procedures. Ability to: Skillfully and safely operate and maintain light and large grounds equipment and use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools; Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and gardening work; Understand and carry out oral and written directions; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be: Experience: Two years of experience in the operation of large grounds equipment, tractors, trucks, and large power mowers used in performing grounds maintenance and gardening work, and other specialized grounds maintenance functions. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License and Certificate Requirement Possession of a valid Class II California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Possession of a certificate authorizing service in weed and pest abatement. Condition of Employment Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.
