SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MANAGER OF GROUNDS MAINTENANCE BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Senior Director of Building Services/Construction, plan, coordinate and direct the landscaping and gardening operations of the District. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Develop programs for proper year-round maintenance and operation of school grounds. E Design new or revised plans for school landscaping and sprinkler systems for major portions of an existing school plan. E Direct and supervise grounds personnel regarding operational methods and supply and equipment requirements. E Determine future requirements of personnel and equipment. E Periodically inspect grounds and gardening work. E Write specifications and arrange for special bids. E Determine priorities and schedule and assign work. E Confer with District officials regarding operational problems. E Review and assign work requisitions. E Inspect completed work assignments. E Review and prepare cost estimates. E Interview, review and make recommendations for employment, transfer, promotion and dismissal of grounds personnel. E Prepare reports. E Work with vendors to solve problems or develop more economical or effective program. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance. Landscape design, especially institutional and school design. City and community. ABILITY TO: Analyze costs. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Plan and supervise work. Train, supervise and evaluate personnel. MANAGER OF GROUNDS MAINTENANCE (CONTINUED) Page 2 Maintain records and prepare reports. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and five years progressively responsible experience in institutional grounds maintenance and gardening including three years in supervising gardening and grounds maintenance and operations. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors and pollen. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Seeing to perform grounds keeping work, read materials and drive a vehicle. Walking and standing for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds keeping tools and equipment. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds. Heavy physical labor. HAZARDS: Chemicals from pesticides.
