MAINTENANCE WORKER
DEFINITION
Under general direction to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair assignments both independently and as an assistant to journey level trades persons; and to do other related work as required. Individuals in this classification perform semi-skilled or skilled work in general construction maintenance and repair. The class is differentiated from that of General Maintenance Journeyman by the degree of skill routinely required and in that not as much independent judgment and planning are required. Assignments may include assisting journey level maintenance personnel, working as part of a crew, or working independently.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Assists with or performs semi-skilled or skilled maintenance, installation, and repair to buildings and equipment in connection with construction and mechanical trades, including, but not limited to plumbing, painting, carpentry, heating, electrical, masonry, welding, metal work, glazing, tile work, roofing, flooring, and ventilation systems.
· Drives a District vehicle to and from worksites.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid, California Driver’s License.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance work in one or more of the trades;
Basic math;
Safe driving practices;
Safe practices in operation of equipment and tools.
Ability to:
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair work;
Perform heavy manual labor;
Do the daily requirements of the job willingly;
Use power equipment safely and skillfully;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Work with a minimum of supervision;
Drive automotive equipment safely and in accordance with traffic laws.
Read and understand handwritten or typed documents, instructions, the display screen or various equipment and machines, and blueprints and schematics;

Climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders;
Lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects;

Accomplish tasks in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner;
Accomplish tasks with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner;
Demonstrate manual dexterity, and steadiness and stability of hand movement necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures in a safe and effective manner;
Operate both manual and power hand tools in a safe and effective manner;
Operate a variety of industrial or motor vehicles, equipment and tools associated with building repair, maintenance, preventive maintenance and construction trades in a safe and effective manner;
Maintain steady, regular attendance.
Experience:
Two years of experience in the construction, building and maintenance trades or in work involving duties similar to those listed above.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
Personal Qualities:
Adaptability and flexibility; mature attitude; good judgment; dependability; reliability; highly motivated.
