JOB CLASS: MAINTENANCE WORKER
LEVEL: I
POSITION TITLE: MAINTENANCE WORKER I
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are assigned primarily to maintenance and repair functions within schools, shops, garages, warehouses, kitchens and offices. Successful candidates in this class will typically have a background in one or more trades of the maintenance, mechanical or construction industries. Positions within this class require the ability to work outdoors, independently, on schedule and with an eye to detail. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the degree of skills and expertise required to perform successfully within the assignment. Positions within this class are under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Operations or his designee.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under supervision, to perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, construction and repair on school buildings, grounds and equipment, and do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Assist in maintenance work involving repair, alteration or construction of school facilities including electrical, plumbing, and painting
• Perform operations involving power tools or equipment
• Assist in routine maintenance duties
• Replace window glass and perform heavy manual labor.
• Operate and make minor repairs to power mowers, trucks, tractors, sprayers, edgers, trimmers and hand tools
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education and Experience - Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years experience in custodial, maintenance or related work.
Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of the basic operations, tools and terms used in building and grounds maintenance; ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform manual labor, work cooperatively with others and acquire skill quickly in work requiring mechanical ability; ability to work with and around children; ability to relate well to parents and other adults.
Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid California driver’s license
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
___ Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
___ Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
___ Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
___ Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
___ Able to stand in one space for sustained periods
___ Able to sit for sustained periods of time
___ Able to work with trees, plants, shrubs, flowers, soil and turf without allergic reaction
___ Able to sit for sustained periods of time
___ Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally
