Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, conduct behind-the-wheel training and on-the-road driving skill proficiency and competency appraisal of bus drivers; train substitute and new drivers in the operation of a school bus.

***Please note that this position is a non-contracted, substitute position open to currently contracted PUSD Bus Drivers.*** *This is a safety sensitive position and employees will be subject to Department of Transportation Drug Testing Guidelines**
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and five years of experience as a school bus driver, one year of which involved transporting students with special needs. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Class B or Class A commercial driver's license with a passenger and air brake endorsement. California School Bus Driver's Certificate. US Department of Transportation Medical Examination Certificate. Maintain current First Aid Certification (as required to maintain valid and current CA Special Driver's Certificate for School Bus). Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier. Incumbents in this classification must satisfactorily complete 20 hours of classroom training and 20 hours behind-the-wheel training. NOTE: This classification has been identified as a safety-sensitive job class based on the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Employees in this job class are subject to random selection for alcohol or controlled substance testing.

Behind the Wheel Instructor – The Behind the Wheel Instructor is responsible for training bus drivers in safe and defensive driving techniques and performs the duties of a Bus Driver as assigned.
Perform and document on-the-road driving skills appraisals of School Bus Drivers and Operators of District commercial and passenger motor vehicles in compliance with safety practices, departmental policies, State and Federal Codes and Regulations. E
Perform designated, State approved behind-the-wheel duties under the review of the District Certified Driver Instructor. E
Establish, maintain, and/or support standards of personal conduct and discipline, in accordance with the current District policies. E
Prepare and maintain behind-the-wheel training, testing, and evaluation records; prepare reports and documentation required by State and/or federal law. E
Conduct safe riding practices and bus evacuation training for students and staff at District schools as assigned. E
Inspect wheelchairs and car/safety seats for safe transportation of students, toddlers, and infants; report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel. E
Communicate with students, parents, District personnel, and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to bus routes, schedules, student behavior, and assigned activities. E
Evaluate bus stops and routes. E
Drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation; transport students to and from school, special events, and field trips. E
Operate two-way communication devices. E
Attend classes, safety meetings, and in-service trainings as assigned or as required for maintenance of certificate and license. E
Perform the duties of a Bus Driver as assigned or needed. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
