OVERVIEW:

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The area provides a wide array of outdoor amenities and activities with miles of hiking and biking trails, national parks, two lakes, and the Sacramento River. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To participate in the operation of grounds equipment and other grounds maintenance activities and operations. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this classification oversee and direct the work of others in the accomplishment of specific projects as assigned. This job class is responsible for ensuring that assigned grounds projects are completed in a satisfactory manner and for performing the more skilled duties related to general grounds maintenance.

 

CLASSIFICATION: Range 29 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

 

SUPERVISOR: Director of Physical Plant or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

 

• Participates in general gardening and ground maintenance work in the upkeep of campus grounds.

• Maintains and marks athletic fields; mows, sweeps, verticuts, aerifies, and fertilizes fields.

• Operates hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers, edgers, trimmers, sweepers, rotortillers, and tractors.

• Performs servicing, maintenance and repair work on groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, sprayers, blowers, etc.

• Assists in designing, constructing, and maintaining landscape projects.

• Applies pesticides to grounds and garden areas for pest control purposes

• Sets up and cleans for athletic events.

• Acts as lead person for groundskeeping crew as assigned.

• Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

 

Knowledge of:

• The safe use, maintenance, and operation of groundskeeping tools, power equipment, and sprinkling systems

• The care, use, and application of pesticides and fertilizers

• Proper methods, techniques and tools used in the maintenance and installation of athletic fields and sprinkler systems.

 

Ability to:

• Effectively and safely use hand and power tools and equipment associated with groundskeeping and gardening work

• Read blueprints and install layouts for athletic fields

• Calibrate fertilizers and sprayers

• Understand and follow both oral and written instructions

• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties

• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

 

Experience/Education

 

• Three to four years experience in general landscape maintenance.

• High school graduation or equivalent, with some college horticulture classes preferred, or equivalent years of experience.

• Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License

New Classified Appointments will be placed at Step 1 on the Classified Salary Schedule and will graduate to the next step on July 1st if the hire date is before February 1st, with subsequent steps annually thereafter to a maximum 21st step.
