PAINTER
DEFINITION
Under general direction to perform journeyman level work in painting interior and exterior surfaces of new or existing buildings, furniture, and equipment; to appropriately prepare surfaces for painting; to erect and move scaffolding as needed; to mark and stripe parking lots, athletic courts, and walkways; to clean and maintain painting equipment in good condition; to assist other maintenance workers by performing duties in other maintenance trade areas as needed; and to do other related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
A major portion of the incumbent’s time in this class is utilized in performing district-wide painting at the journeyman level, including painting-related tasks. As assigned, the incumbent may also assist other maintenance personnel as a helper or independently.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Uses brush, roller, and airless or compressor spray gun equipment in applying paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, lacquer, and other protective and decorative undercoats and finish coats to a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, glass, stucco, wallboard, brick, and cement; spray paints acoustic ceilings; patches and repairs plastic or fabric wall coverings; resurfaces chalkboards; washes, scrapes, sands, fills, and in other manner prepares surfaces for painting and repainting; applies undercoat and finish coat to a variety of surfaces; sizes and tints plaster walls and other surfaces; may refinish furniture, lockers, and other equipment; erects, rigs, and moves scaffolding and platforms; cleans and performs routine maintenance on brushes, tools, and equipment; paints signs; mixes paints; matches, blends, harmonizes and contrasts color; may lay out and paint athletic courts, walkways, and parking lots; plans, organizes, and lays out painting related tasks, may estimate amounts of labor and materials required for painting jobs; may perform routine plastering duties; maintains a variety of simple records as required; may order supplies and materials; supervises the work of helpers; drives a service vehicle to and from work site; assists other maintenance personnel in various trades as needed; performs other duties as may be assigned.
LICENSE
Possession of a valid, appropriate California Driver’s License.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the painting trade;
Methods of preparing different surfaces for painting and repainting;
Health and safety precautions relating to use of painting materials;
Safe driving practices.

Ability to:
Skillfully use and care for painting tools and equipment;
Read and understand paint labels, diagrams, and specifications (blueprints);
Mix and match paints, to blend, harmonize, and contrast colors;
Apply basic math concepts such as computing square footage;
Rig and work from ladders and scaffolding;
Estimate and compute time and material costs;
Maintain cooperative working relationships with others;
Work with minimum supervision;
Use independent judgment in performance of painting tasks and painting-related tasks;
Perform heavy manual labor.
Experience:
Four years of skilled maintenance work in the painting trade.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
