Job Description: Bilingual Instructional Assistant



Under the direction of the site or District administrator, the Bilingual Instructional Assistant

strives to contribute to the overall mission of the district to create an environment that both

promotes academic excellence and provides an emotionally safe environment for our students.

The Bilingual Instructional Assistant assists in performing a variety of instructional and clerical-related duties. These duties will include providing instructional support for students,

including English Learners, in core content courses, the preparation and/or modification of

related instructional materials, assisting with initial and annual CELDT administration and

primary language assessment, translating for parents, teachers, and students, assisting core

content teachers with making parent contact, when needed, and doing other related work as

required.


Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of classroom procedures including but not limited to clarifying

instructional concepts for English Learners in core content classes, helping English

Learners formulate and ask questions of their core content teachers, assisting English

Learners with academic organization, note-taking, assignment/project completion, and

preparation for tests

  • Routine clerical duties may include correcting papers, photocopying, and organizing

instructional materials

  • Assists teacher with the presentation of instructional materials and exercises and the

supervision of students

  • Works with English Learners and English Only students individually or in small groups to

reinforce instructional concepts. Assists in monitoring student progress and provides

assistance as directed by the teacher

  • Prepares labels, charts, bulletin boards and classroom displays as instructed

  • Sets up and arranges supplies and equipment in classroom for student use

  • Operates a variety of classroom equipment, including but not limited to computer and

related software, copier, fax machine, paper cutter, etc.

  • Assists in maintaining a neat and orderly learning environment

  • May observe activities of students on playground

  • Observes and records students’ behavior and other significant data

  • Types various materials

  • Provides minor first aid in the absence of teacher or nurse

    • Translates related materials from English to the designated language, may include

    assisting with instructing, developing or modifying instructional materials in a designated

    language

    • May assist with oral or written translation during meetings and telephone calls or in other

    situations that require similar communication for limited or non-English speaking

    students and/or parents

    • Performs related duties as assigned


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of the general needs and behavior of students

    • Knowledge of safe classroom practices

    • Knowledge of correct usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation of English and a

    designated second language

    • Ability to learn the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties, perform

    routine instructional and clerical duties, establish and maintain effective working

    relationships with adults and students, understand and carry out oral and written

    instructions; operate a computer

    • Ability to fluently speak, read, write, and translate English and a designated second

    language


    Supervision/Evaluation:

    Under the supervision and direction of the site or District administrator.


    Education and Experience Required:

    • Equivalent to graduation from high school

    • No experience required.


    Working Conditions:

    • Regular/occasional contact with students, teachers, parents, staff, Board of Education

    members, community members and outside agency personnel

    • Wear District provided identification or clothing as required

    • Work environment-indoors and outdoors

    • Possible confrontations

    • Moderate to high noise levels.


    Physical Abilities:

    • Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of

    various office equipment and machines

    • Able to conduct verbal conversation

  • Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)

  • Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk

  • Able to sit for sustained periods of time

  • Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, and ladders

  • Able to kneel or squat for extended periods of time

  • Able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds

  • Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Able to sustain strenuous manual labor for 4 hours with legal breaks

  • Able to operate office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information

  • Dexterity of hand and fingers to operate equipment, carrying, pushing or lifting supplies

  • Visual capability to observe

  • Able to move around school environment independently

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder extension and flexion

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion

  • Able to exhibit full range of motion for hand activities including fine manipulation,

grasping, flexion of wrist, and gross manipulation.
