BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

DEAN OF STUDENTS

DEFINITION:

Under the supervision of the school Principal or designee, the Dean of Students will assist in the resolution of issues which interfere with students receiving the maximum benefit from the school’s educational programs; assist in protecting the health and welfare of students; establish a student personnel program to assist students relative to educational and personal-social activities; and plan and administer a program of effective student discipline. This position will be funded one-half from the general fund and one-half from categorical funds.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees the intervention and counseling component of the student discipline program.
Works with students and the school community to create a safe and supportive academic environment.
Monitors student attendance and recommends appropriate responses.
Assists in the planning and implementation of safe school and violence prevention strategies and programs to ensure a safe and secure campus.
Participates in district-wide and site-based meetings and professional development activities.
Organizes and supervises intervention programs for at-risk students in the area of Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics.
Consults with administration in the area of effective instructional strategies and staff development.
Assists with analysis of student assessment data.
Assists in planning and implementation of various categorical programs.
Assists administration in monitoring departments, or programs; articulating with staff to develop goals and objectives; observes classrooms, offices, and activities; demonstrates leadership and offers recommendations for growth and improvement.
Supervises students during the day and in various school activities in the evenings.
Supervises administration of tests, inventories and surveys. Prepares reports and communicates information from such activities.
Communicates with parents, District Office, the public and other schools and public agencies including the police juvenile authorities and county agencies as necessary.
Supervise and evaluate classified employees under the direction of the Principal.
Attend IEP meetings and provide input into student learning, progress, and assessment.
Create and monitor student intervention plans.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Possession of a valid California Administrative Services credential or enrollment in an accredited administrative credential program. Administrative credential program must be completed within one year of date of hire in this position.
• Master’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, preferably in counseling, psychology or administration, or a closely related field.
• Five or more years of successful teaching or counseling experience in a multicultural environment.
• Successful experience in a responsible administrative position preferred.
• Successful experience as a counselor or head counselor desirable.
• Bilingual ability desirable (Spanish preferred).

• Principles, methods, techniques, strategies goals, and objectives of public education; curriculum and instruction.
• Progressive student discipline procedures.
• Student behavior management.
• Campus security procedures.
• Social, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of adolescent and pre-adolescent students.
• District organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
• Current applicable laws, regulations, codes, policies, and procedures.
• Interpersonal skills, conflict resolution strategies and procedures, and team management building methods and techniques.
