DEFINITION: The Library Media Technician II, under general direction of the principal, performs complex clerical tasks and media work in the library, assists students and staff in learning to use the library, and utilizes the Dewey Decimal system and media materials. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Handles and supervises the circulation procedures including maintaining patron cards, preparing overdue notices, previewing materials, keeping records of equipment loans and returns. • Assists students in accessing library materials and reinforces library skills. • Introduces student to all aspects of the library medial and resources. • Implements and supervises electronic library management system for circulation and cataloging. • Collaborates with teachers to determine library media center purchases in accordance with California State Framework and TUSD standards. • Assesses and collects all library media fines. • Meets with vendors, publisher representatives and consults professional library journals to assist with library acquisitions. • Processes all new library resources for circulation. • Generates letters, reports, invoices, requisitions, cards, lists and other materials. • Maintains accurate files and inventories of library materials, library books, audiovisual hardware and software. • Maintains an accurate up-to-date automated catalog and circulation system. • Trains, establishes procedures, and prepares work schedules for student assistants and parent volunteers. • Performs minor repairs on library or audiovisual materials. • Creates book displays, learning centers and bulletin boards. • Conducts storytelling and/or booktalk activities. • Maintains a suitable environment conducive to reading and study. • Assists in writing/updating library and classroom grants. • Performs related tasks as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: • Library methods, classification systems, procedures and terminology. • Operation of a variety of office equipment including a computer. • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. • Alphabetizing, filing and record keeping. • Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures. • Proper lifting techniques. • District policies, rules and regulations. Ability to: • Perform a variety of technical and specialized library media center functions. • Provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers. • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. • File and check records quickly and accurately. • Type 35 words per minute. • Work cooperatively with others. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Observe health and safety regulations. Education/Training/Required Certification: • High school graduate or equivalent. • College-level coursework in library science or related field and three years clerical or library experience is desirable.
