Job Description Summary
This position will be assigned to the San Luis Obispo Campus and will have the following schedule, Monday through Friday 5:00 pm to 1:30 am. This position is eligible for a 7.5% shift differential stipend.
DEFINITIONUnder general supervision of the Supervisor Custodial Services plan, assign, oversee and schedule work of assigned custodial staff, and personally perform cleaning and maintenance work in District offices, classrooms, and other facilities; and perform other related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Lead Custodian position is distinguished from other classes in the Custodial series by the requirement to oversee and schedule the work of custodians and student/hourly workers and recommend improvement or modification. Additionally, incumbents assigned to a College Center are required to work with minimal supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
Incumbents in this position support institutional effectiveness and promote student learning by ensuring District facilities are maintained in a clean and safe manner.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
District-wide Functions:
• Oversee and schedule the work of assigned custodial staff;• Develop cleaning schedules in coordination with classroom use and special events;• Plan, organize, and arrange special custodial schedules for summers and breaks such as: spring and winter;• Make recommendations for improvements and modifications to the Supervisor Custodial Services;• Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodial staff;• Instruct custodial staff on proper handling and mixing of chemicals;• Review work assignments for completion and compliance with established maintenance standards;• Receive and review special requests and assign work as necessary;• Initiate and organize training programs and demonstrations;• Provide input to the Supervisor of Custodial Services regarding Custodial staff job performance;• Perform all phases of custodial work:• Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and fixtures; replenish supplies in restrooms and related facilities;• Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment;• Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffing machines and other equipment;• Replace lights and ballasts;• Open and secure classrooms and buildings; set and disengage the alarm system;• Move and arrange furniture and equipment and prepare rooms;• Provide information to faculty, staff, students and the public with regard to custodial services;• Receive and review complaints concerning custodial maintenance work, and initiate corrective action;• Requisition custodial materials and supplies and deliver to custodial storage areas;• Maintain an inventory control of all custodial supplies and equipment;• Perform personally all phases of custodial maintenance work as required;• Maintain clean and orderly work areas; inspect and report health, safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority;• Drive a District vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies;• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, students, and others contacted in the performance of duties;• Communicate effectively orally and in writing;• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities;• Perform other related duties as required.
College Center Functions:
• Coordinate repairs of campus facilities, furnishings and equipment with appropriate District personnel and arrange for maintenance with outside contractors;• Evaluate custodial operations and activities;• Respond to emergency custodial requests as needed;• Update and maintain Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) binder;• Inventory, order, receive, distribute, and store custodial supplies and equipment;• Estimate the need for supplies and equipment;• Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance to custodial equipment;• Maintain written records for inventories and reports;• Learn location and operation of electrical panels, master switches, fire extinguishers, alarms, work routines, and schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
• Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade.
Preferred
• Associate degree;• Hazardous Material and Chemical training.
Experience:
Required
• Three years of experience in building custodial work.
Preferred
• Supervisory experience.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of:
• Modern cleaning methods, procedures, equipment and materials;• Requirements for maintaining district buildings in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition;• Inventory controls of supplies and equipment;• Hazardous material, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and chemicals;• Computer programs necessary for record keeping and database management;• Principles of supervision;• Correct English usage: grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.
Duties may require the ability to:
• Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds;• See for the purpose of reading and understanding regulations, laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter;• Hear and understand speech at normal levels;• Speak so that others will be able to understand a normal in-person and telephone conversation;• Sit or stand for extended periods of time;• Lift and/or carry pounds;• Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

SALARY SCHEDULEBelow is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's bargaining agreement, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below. • Salary Schedule Range: $4,146 - $5,040 per month.• Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,146 - $4,571 per month.
