About the Employer

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County’s most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students. In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. OCDE’s vision is that “Orange County students will lead the nation in college and career readiness and success.” Department staff are working to achieve this goal in collaboration with educators at all levels of student development, from early childhood through higher education, and in partnership with families, businesses and community organizations.

Job Summary

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking an experienced and visionary Chief of Staff to help drive our mission and vision forward. This high-impact role will place you at the heart of our organization, collaborating with top leaders and overseeing key initiatives that shape the future of education. As the Chief of Staff, you will: Lead and Coordinate: Serve as the principal liaison between the Superintendent and other divisions, executive staff, the Board of Education, and external organizations, ensuring seamless communication and coordination. Strategize and Innovate: Develop and implement strategic programs and policies to address organizational goals and opportunities, guiding the overall strategic planning process. Drive Initiatives: Oversee and manage high-priority projects with a focus on data accountability and visualization to enhance student performance metrics. Collaborate and Communicate: Build and maintain strong relationships with other departments, agencies, and stakeholders to improve service delivery and resolve issues. Champion Education: Provide leadership in interpreting and complying with educational laws and regulations, representing OCDE in local and statewide initiatives.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: • Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in education, public administration, or a closely related field. • At least seven (7) years of increasingly responsible professional and directly related experience in PK-12 education, including policy development, project management, and organizational development. Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements: • Possession of a valid California Credential authorizing instruction or service in a public school program or Pupil Personnel Services Credential.
