HAYWARD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LEAD CUSTODIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Plant Operations Supervisor, lead and participate in the work of the evening high school custodial crew; assure scheduled work is completed in accordance with established standards; make a variety of minor and emergency repairs; meet and assist the public in the scheduled use of the school under the Civic Center Act. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Direct, guide, check, train and provide work direction to assigned night custodians; assign special work as required. Coordinate activities with the Plant Operations Supervisor to assure that work is properly scheduled and performed during the evening shift. Oversee and participate in cleaning school facilities, offices, halls, walks, meeting areas and dining areas; sweep, polish, mop, dust, wax and disinfect, empty trash cans and wash windows, doors, walls and fixtures. Inspect buildings, reporting unsatisfactory or dangerous situations. Admit authorized persons to assigned recreational and classroom areas during evening session; distribute materials such as books and recreational equipment; maintain records of equipment use and submit reports on activities of crew. Perform minor maintenance work such as replacing door stops, floor tiles, light switches or lights, oiling electric motors, repairing curtains and lockers and changing locker combinations; remove graffiti as assigned. Secure school at the end of the shift; lock doors, windows and gates and set alarms. Maintain security of the school during the evening; contact school security personnel or local police and fire departments as necessary. OTHER DUTIES: Respond to questions from visitors on the campus during the evening hours; assist teachers in special cleaning or custodial activities; serve as Plant Operations Supervisor in the absence of the Plant Operations Supervisor. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Work scheduling methods. Various trades at the semi-skilled level required for the maintenance and minor repair of physical plant, facilities and equipment, including the heating system. Materials, methods and tools used in custodial work. Methods and tools used in groundskeeping. Applicable health and safety regulations. Record-keeping techniques. Principles of training and providing work direction. ABILITY TO: Lead, monitor and train others and review quality of work performed. Coordinate, schedule, set priorities and make decisions. Read and understand OSHA applicable regulations, District policies, warehouse catalogs and blueprints. Write legibly to record information. Make routine arithmetic computations with speed and accuracy. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years experience performing school custodial work involving some lead supervision, minor maintenance work and considerable public contact. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. Evening or variable hours. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Pushing and pulling cleaning equipment. Lifting and moving heavy furniture. Climbing ladders and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to replace lights in high places. HAZARDS: Exposure to dust and chemicals such as ammonia and bleach.
