Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director-Elementary Education and Site Principal, the Academic Coach: ELA/ELD/Literacy provides leadership and professional learning at a site- and District-level in Early Literacy, English Language Development, and literacy; supports the District’s core instructional English Language Arts/English Language Development (ELA/ELD) curriculum through direct services to teachers; extends literacy expertise to other content areas; coaches others to build efficacy and capacity to teach and support literacy. The Literacy Coach must take a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom, school, district-wide) to directly support instruction, model lessons in classrooms, help teachers plan instruction, create systems, and facilitate and lead professional development. Must have knowledge of child development and current research-based pedagogy, curriculum resources, appropriate classroom management techniques for early learning classrooms, and reflective practice mentor/coaching strategies. In literacy, the academic coach will focus primarily on TK through 3rd grade (P-3) and will be responsible for assisting teachers in the implementation and effective delivery of scientifically based reading instruction. They provide ongoing professional development, coaching support, and appropriate services to schools for a cohesive, sustained, intensive, and classroom-focused approach that is rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students. They will facilitate learning aligned to the science of reading research to teachers that will improve the implementation of aligned practices into daily literacy instruction and intervention.

Full-time position includes District paid health, dental, and vision insurance up to a $15,800 district contribution.
Education and Experience: • A minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience, with minimum of three (3) in TK - 3, required • Experience with coaching teachers and delivering professional development • Demonstrated achievement as an educational leader with vision and strong insight, including specific evidence of improvement in meeting the needs of identified student populations as a result of the candidate’s leadership and actions • Master’s Degree, required, with a preferred emphasis in language and/or literacy • A valid California Driver’s License, required • An understanding of the California Standards for ELA and researched-based best practices in curriculum design and instruction • Significant experience with ELA curriculum development and daily lesson planning, including familiarity with the Science of Reading research and Heggerty programs. • Multi-faceted, multi-skilled, resourceful self-starter willing to do whatever it takes to help SUSD’s students reach a level of academic excellence • Excellence in time management, taking initiative, and follow-through
