Requirements / Qualifications
DSUSD will recommend qualified (non-credentialed) applicants to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the issuance of an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit. At this time the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) is not required for applicants with a Bachelor's Degree.
Official Transcripts are only needed if you do not already possess California Teaching Credential or Substitute Permit. Official Transcripts are needed If this is the first time that you will be applying for an Emergency 30 Day Substitute Permit.
- Copy of Transcript (Insert a copy of transcript reflecting at least a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree. An official transcript reflecting the Bachelor's Degree is required if this is your first time applying for a credential or substitute permit. Do not drop off transcripts; you will be directed when to provide or when to order official transcripts. DO NOT OPEN your transcripts if they are in a sealed envelope to upload a copy, instead insert a placeholder stating "I will provide official transcripts")
- Credential Copy (Insert a copy of your California Credential or Substitute Permit. If you are a Non-credentialed applicant insert a placeholder stating "I will apply for a 30-day substitute permit via DSUSD")
- Health (A Medical Screening and TB Screening Clearance is required. Please upload a copy of your TB Clearance. We will accept results that have been completed up to 4 years. If you do not have a TB clearance, please insert a placeholder stating "I understand a TB clearance and Medical Screening is a requirement". We will provide the Medical Screening form in Employment Packet. )
- Letter(s) of Recommendation (Letters of Recommendation - 3 Letters are required)

Medical exam will be required for a person employed for the first time to teach in a California Classroom as a substitute teacher. A medical form will be provided once application is processed.
Once your application has past the screening process, you will be notified via email to come in to pick up an employment packet. Fingerprint Clearance is required for both Desert Sands Unified School District and State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Fingerprint forms will be provided in the packet.
