CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direct supervision of the school librarian, to perform varied paraprofessional duties in a library, and to do related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Is responsible for the circulation desk. Checks materials out and in, shelves books, supervises shelving, receives and logs periodicals, assists with copying.
Assist students and staff in the use of library technology and resources to locate and select materials and find information.
Independently supervises large groups of students and maintains orderly environment during brunch, lunch and other periods.
In the absence of the librarian is responsible for supervising the library. Maintains established standards and rules for acceptable student behavior in the library.
Gives information over telephone to students, parents, and district staff.
Assist librarian in training and supervising student assistants
Manage a variety of media and computer equipment as required by the assignment; utilizes equipment and resources to answer student and staff questions.
Type purchase orders, receives books and supplies. Processes, distributes and catalogs new library media.
Prepare and prints circulation reports and overdue notices.
Mend and repair damaged books. Discards outdated, irreparable and otherwise inappropriate materials.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Computer and other electronic resources, i.e., INTERNET, CD-ROM, software and printers.
Dewey Decimal classification system.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Standard office equipment operation including computer equipment.
Research skills.
Record-keeping techniques and practices.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
ABILITY TO:
Do simple reference work.
Do responsible clerical work with speed and accuracy.
Display competency with computer.
Meet physical and/or mental requirements associated with the tasks outlined in this position description.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Apply and explain library rules, regulations and policies.
Assist students and staff with research and special projects.
Bend, stoop, reach and lift properly.
Maintain records and files using alpha and numeric systems.
Maintain library in a neat and orderly condition.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Complete work with many interruptions.
Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
Meet schedules and deadlines.
Train and provide work directions to student assistants and volunteers.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of two years of college (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the college education on the year-for-year basis) and one year of experience in performing sub-professional duties in a library is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
•School library environment; subject to frequent interruptions
•Light physical labor, lifting books and AV equipment
Licenses and other requirements:
•Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance
•Evidence of TB clearance
If required to operate a vehicle:
•Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
•Acceptable driving record and qualification for insurability by the District’s insurance carrier
