Comments and Other Information
Julian is a small rural town in the mountains of Eastern San Diego County - so Julian Junior High is not your typical neighborhood school. Our K-8 district consists of one elementary and one junior high school, covers 600 square miles, includes two Native American reservations and serves a diverse student population of 300 students (approximately 90 in grades 6-8).
Our mission is to provide every student success in learning. We are dedicated to the individual development of attitudes, skills, knowledge, and responsibility essential to successful achievement in school and society. We actively involve parents and the community in supporting student learning and development.
Anticipated caseload: 15-20 students Currently 4 instruction aides supporting caseload. Julian Union School District is a K-8 public school with a history of low staff turnover, a supportive and healthy School Board, and a close, family-like staff. All students are respected as individual learners with individual needs and learning styles. An ideal candidate will be experienced and is looking for an environment where they have freedom to excel, work alongside a small team of SAI and GE peers, and a desire to foster positive and productive relationships with students and parents through skill, empathy and communication. The Director of Special Education, David Pierce, is also a principal, so the ability to communicate well with all members of the team, navigate SEIS and use many available resources to overcome obstacles is valued. Successfully leading members of their aide support staff is part of the job. This person will know where Julian Elementary and Junior High is located and would likely visit this beautiful community prior to applying. The district is surprisingly large and diverse, with approximately 200 students at the elementary and 100 at the junior high. Dynamic persons are always most successful, and we are exploring improving our services through the development of a Learning Center model for select students. There are two other full time SAI teachers currently, and happily, working for the District: elementary mild/mod and special day. They desire a team-based approach to adapting to current and future students with IEPs. The two campuses are adjoining and are shared by a short walk. Speech services are currently provided three days/week, and OT is twice a week.
