The Multiple Subject Alternative High School Teacher is employed by John Muir Charter Schools (JMCS) and is responsible for classroom instruction of young adults participating in the California Conservation Corps (CCC) in Placer CA. Placer CCC and JMCS’s innovative education programs are designed to provide youth, ages 18-25, with an engaging educational experience that meets individual needs. We combine classroom-based instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, technical job training and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school diploma program. Classroom activities are combined with top notch vocational training provided by Placer CCC. The academic classroom is a self-contained class with approximately 15 students; the instructor facilitates all academic content, including collaboration with Special Ed department to appropriately address needs of students with an IEP. JMCS provides curriculum and support, and the instructor is held responsible for creating a dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and supportive experience for our students. This position will be supported by Placer CCC staff who provide vocational training, work experience and case management. JMCS staff on site work collaboratively with the Placer CCC staff to support the success of the students. Teachers are expected to actively engage in all school-wide professional development, which includes several all-school Zoom Meetings throughout the year, a 3-day in-person all-school conference in January, non-student teacher planning days, monthly JMCS Director meetings, and New Teacher Training (for all those new to our school) via Zoom during the first week of August. The position is a full-time salaried position. The school operates on an 11-month, Semester calendar running August through June, with holidays and breaks. This position is expected to be an active and cooperative member of the JMCS and Placer CCC communities.

The Multiple Subject Lead Teacher is employed by John Muir Charter School (JMCS) and is responsible for classroom instruction of youth participating in the Riverside Heritage program (Riverside). The teacher will work closely with the Riverside staff team to integrate the Partner Agency's Mission into the classroom.
The Multiple Subject teacher will be responsible for assisting students in the Riverside program to complete their secondary education and to provide necessary support services to enable participants to be successful. The teacher will assist with enrolling and assessing students to determine the proper course of study that will lead to a high school diploma and prepare them for the successful continuation of post-secondary education. This teacher’s primary role will be to instruct students in Multiple Subjects. The teacher reports to the [Site] Program Coordinator and John Muir Lead Teacher on site.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include (but not limited to) the following:
- Prepare monthly, weekly and daily lesson plans for all courses.
- Be able to teach all levels of Multiple Subject material at a variety of skills levels.
- Provide overall site management, including student conduct, staff supervision, safety, etc.
- Commitment to the Partner Agency program model and incorporate practical learning experiences related to job readiness, life skills and leadership.
- Coordinate with Partner Agency staff and be a strong team player to ensure comprehensive, synchronized services.
- Conduct culturally relevant classes appropriate for students coming from many cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds and incorporating students’ experiences into learning.
- Inform the Site Director and other appropriate staff of academic and non-academic issues that affect student progress
- Incorporate college and career planning into regular classroom practice.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress on standardized assessments (STAR)
- Perform duties associated with attendance and record-keeping.
- Other duties as assigned
The teacher will complete all necessary paper work as required by Muir administration, as well as any paperwork requested by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to engage disenfranchised young people from "at risk" conditions in meaningful, interesting and creative learning experiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge in developing class and individual learning plans for trainees.
- Dedication to the basic philosophy of emphasizing the core curriculum and commitment to the vision, mission, core values and philosophy of the Partner Agency.
- Be able to integrate leadership development in the classroom and empower youth through knowledge, literacy and numeracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or any related field.

- California teaching credential is required in Multiple Subject. Single Subject Credential in one or more core subject may be considered.

WORK HOURS
The class schedule for academics is integrated throughout the week with the CCC work program, classes and training and can fluctuate. Corpsmembers are usually in class the afternoon through evening. The teacher’s non-student work time is spent preparing for instruction, requesting records and doing administrative tasks, grading work, and meeting with Placer CCC staff, among other things. The yearly schedule is agreed upon at the beginning of the school in collaboration with Placer CCC programming structure.
