JOB SPECIFICATION ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT ATTENDANT DEFINITION Under the direction of the Principal, Athletic Director, and/or Physical Education teachers, performs a variety of activities in the locker room, indoor and outdoor P.E. and athletic areas. Performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for certified instructional personnel; and performs related work as required. RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class receive direct assignment, supervision and training from certified instructional personnel and general orientation and training from the principal through District programs. They assist instructional personnel in bringing stimulation, broadening and creative experiences to the learning process; i.e. assume responsibility for physical education equipment, lockers, and locker room; and assist the athletic department with various activities. The full responsibility for appropriate instruction, curriculum and evaluation resides with the certified instructional personnel. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: • Assumes responsibility for all equipment used in the physical education program. • Assists with athletic equipment as needed. • Sets up equipment for use in class. • Sets up and dismantles the gym for P.E. and athletic contests. • Operates laundry equipment for P.E. and athletic teams. • Washes uniforms. • Maintains lost and found articles. • Issues and maintains P.E. equipment on a daily basis. • Keeps physical education equipment inventoried and repaired. • Issues lockers and combinations to students and maintains files of them. • Minor repairs to lockers as needed. • Operates a variety of gymnasium, P.E. and other equipment as assigned. • Orders equipment and supplies. • Assists with charge records. • Assists with supervision, safety, and security of the locker room, restrooms and related areas during class time and between class time. • Observes and reports behavior patterns to instructional staff and intervenes as necessary. • Assists instructional personnel with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises. • Assists overseeing and supervising students during classroom, P.E. and sports-related activities. • Performs a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials. • Maintains student records. • Operates a variety of instructional media, office machines and equipment. • Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher. • Maintains records of materials and equipment as directed. • Participates in District in-service programs. • Performs related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Knowledge of: • Use of standard office machines. • Oral and written communication skills and basic math. • Materials and equipment used in a wide variety of sports. • Operation and care of laundry equipment. • Care, maintenance and storage of athletic equipment and clothing. • Safety practices and work methods. • Equipment ordering procedures. • Techniques used in controlling and motivating students. • Basic record keeping techniques. • Inventory methods and practices. • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Ability to: • Assume responsibility for supervising students. • Operate office machines. • Launder P.E. and athletic uniforms without fading or damaging them. • Make repairs on athletic equipment. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Perform routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations. • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children. • Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public. • Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business. • Meet schedules and time lines. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; some paid or volunteer clerical experience or work with children in an educational or child care setting is desirable; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. • Incumbents are encouraged to participate in courses, seminars and workshops in the area of instructions services, psychology or guidance. REQUIREMENTS • Pass the Athletic Equipment Attendant Examination with a satisfactory score. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES • A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. • First Aide Certificate. • CPR Certificate. PERSONAL QUALITIES Mature emotional stability, interest in and understanding of students, good health; flexibility and patience. WORKING CONDITIONS; Environment: • Indoor and outdoor work environment. Physical Abilities: • Bending at the waist and stooping. • Lifting and carrying moderately heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds). • Pushing or pulling equipment. • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. • Standing and walking for extended periods of time. • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment. • Hearing and speaking to exchange information. • Seeing to read, do record keeping, and monitor student activities.
