BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CAREER RESOURCE TECHNICIAN

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to operate a high school Career Center; to plan and implement career events and publicity; to assist and supervise students using the Career Center; to provide information to students on higher education program planning and post-high school career planning; to perform administrative support work related to the Career Center; and to perform related work as required.

 

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class provide paraprofessional-level guidance support to students in career research and post-secondary education planning.  Incumbents make presentations to classes and groups of students and assist students on an individual basis.  Incumbents select materials for the Career Center for administrative purchasing approval. Incumbents operate the Career Center without the immediate presence of an instructional professional or administrator.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Order, organize, catalog and maintain files and materials related to careers, technical schools, colleges, armed services, and other private and public programs, and financial aid; set up and maintain files for sophomore plan results and four-year plans.

 

Assist students with computer programs and research assignments; assist students and staff in locating information in the Career Center; assist students in completing applications for colleges, scholarships, and financial aid.

 

Administer and interpret vocational, interest, and aptitude tests and inventories; interview and assess students to determine their career interests and educational needs, and help them to design a career plan; maintain college, career and financial information wall in lobby; contribute to senior bulletin.

 

Prepare and compile information and materials to conduct classroom units on “Job Search Skills” including application completion, telephone techniques, labor market information, interview techniques, and resume writing; plan coordinate and schedule career speakers and presenters from colleges, the armed services and community employers.

 

Assist counselors as needed; serve on assigned committees and teams; perform related work as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Career and occupational resources.

Occupational classification systems and career/life planning trends.

Basic correspondence and publicity development methods.

Guidelines for preparation and evaluation of occupational literature.

Modern office equipment and procedures.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Basic math.

Basic record keeping.

Basic public relations techniques.

 

Ability to:

Learn specific procedures of a career information center.

Communicate effectively in English with students, faculty, staff, and the community both orally and in writing.

Be sensitive to the needs of individuals from varied socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

Speak effectively to groups, both within and outside the school community.

Operate a computer terminal and standard software such as word processing and specialized career programs.

Prepare and compile accurate records.

Work with frequent interruptions.

Work independently, with minimum supervision.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above, and the ability to perform the duties of the position.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in career education, counseling or a closely related field, or one year of responsible experience performing student educational program guidance or other career-related work.  Graduation from college is desirable.
