Job Summary

The job of Payroll Specialist is for the purpose of providing support to department activities with specific responsibility for the processing, recording, updating and reconciling of payroll information in compliance with established policies; performing complex payroll related functions; and, providing instruction, recommendations and accounting support to other personnel. This job reports to the Director of Fiscal Services or designee.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required. Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from high school and three (3) years of increasingly responsible technical and/or clerical experience, with one (1) year in technical payroll, accounting, or related area. (For more information, please view the Job Description) EXAMINATION PROCEDURES This is a promotional and open competitive recruitment. The examination may consist of a training and experience (supplemental responses) evaluation, written test or performance test and a structured oral interview. To qualify to be placed on an eligibility list, a candidate must obtain a passing score on each test part of the examination process. Final scores will be obtained by combining the relative weights of scores on each test part. If Veteran's credit is claimed, proof of status (DD214) must be submitted to the Classified Personnel Office at the same time the application form is submitted or prior to testing. The life of the eligibility list will be twelve (12) months. The resulting eligibility list will be used to fill current and future permanent and substitute vacancies. Applicants who may need reasonable accommodation for interviewing or testing must notify the Personnel Department at (562) 690-2321, three business days prior to the testing date. Date of Examination Candidates who are among the most qualified shall be notified via email or telephone of the time, date and place of the examination(s).
