Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   
Brief description of position: Under the direction of his/her immediate supervisor provides direct counseling services to 6-8 pupils and parents, inservice education and consultation for teachers and other certificated personnel. Counseling services are to assist the pupils to make appropriate decisions relative to academic progress and to develop and maintain satisfactory relationships with other pupils, teachers and other members of the school staff. Major Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Assists in the placement of new pupils using parent conferences, pupil conferences and diagnostic and achievement testing as appropriate. 2. Provides assistance to teachers and parents in the interpretation of abilities and needs of individual pupils. 3. Provides assistance to teachers in planning and conducting parent-teacher meetings. May participate in parent/teacher meetings upon request. 4. Assists the staff in the reinforcement of appropriate pupil behavior standards. 5. Makes preliminary evaluation of pupils referred to counselor by the teachers, administrators or others. Facilitates the involvement of other district specialists, community agencies, and private practitioners when appropriate. 6. Counsels students in individual or group sessions regarding a variety of problems: school, home, parent/child conflict, drugs/alcohol abuse, suicide, etc. 7. Participates in the evaluation of the total instructional program of the school and district and in recommending designed changes and improvements. 8. Consults and collaborates with school personnel to promote a school environment responsive to the needs of the pupils and the educational program. 9. Establishes and organized method of reporting to teachers. 10. Performs other guidance services as directed by his/her immediate supervisor. 11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

Valid California Pupil Personnel Services credential in School Counseling with appropriate authorizations required
