Job Summary

The Library Media Center Assistant works under the direction of the Elementary School Principal and provides library and media services for students, teachers and staff; works directly with large and small groups of students for various activities; coordinates day-to-day activities and operations of the library; assists students, teachers and staff in the selection of library materials and equipment.

Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

Essential Duties:

Provide library and media services and assistance at assigned elementary school; schedule and coordinate library activities; promote student use of the library for research and reading pleasure; Process new books and other materials; check books and other library/media materials in and out at the circulation desk; process returned materials, including returning to shelves and inputting fines into database, as applicable
Assist teachers in researching materials for classroom use; notify teachers of books and materials applicable to classroom topics or themes
Assist students in locating and selecting books and other materials from shelves or with the use of the computerized catalog system; assist students with operation of audiovisual materials and equipment
Operate computerized reference resources to assist students and teachers with research
Conduct library/media center orientations at the beginning of the school year and as needed to explain and demonstrate the use and location of library materials, the catalog software, basic Dewey Decimal system principles, resource materials, and various sections such as biography
Maintain catalog software in an accurate manner; maintain other related records and data such as lost and damaged books, overdue books, and student and staff use of the library/media center

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Knowledge of library practices, procedures, terminology and computer cataloging system; library reference materials and sources; filing, indexing and inventory procedures; modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including computers and related software; record-keeping techniques; research methods; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; oral and written communications skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. 

Ability to learn, explain, and apply school and District rules and policies applicable to the library; work directly with students; check books, materials and equipment in and out at the circulation desk; shelve library materials; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; process a variety of library materials; operation of a computer terminal, related software and data entry and retrieval techniques; perform clerical duties such as filing, duplications and typing; maintain library in a neat and orderly condition; make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately; work independently with little direction; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain records and prepare reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Licenses and Other Requirements

Valid California Driver license required to travel to meetings, trainings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Graduation from high school and some post-secondary education - Experience in a library and/or elementary school environment, working directly with elementary age students is preferred
